American sports cars continue to prove they can compete with the world’s best, not only on the track but also in the eyes of the people who own them. According to the 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette rank among the most satisfying performance cars on sale today.

The annual study measures how owners feel about their new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. Rather than focusing on reliability or maintenance costs, it evaluates the overall ownership experience, including performance, styling, comfort, technology, and emotional appeal.

This year’s results placed the Ford Mustang at the top of the regular Sporty Car category for the second consecutive year. In the Premium Sporty Car segment, the Chevrolet Corvette finished second only to the Porsche 911.

The results reinforce the enduring appeal of America’s two best-known performance cars. Despite fierce competition from Europe and elsewhere, both continue to deliver the kind of driving experience that keeps owners smiling long after taking delivery.

Mustang Tops the Sporty Car Segment Again

The Ford Mustang claimed the highest score in the Sporty Car category, ahead of the MINI Cooper. According to the study, every other eligible model in the segment scored below the category average, highlighting the Mustang’s strong performance among owners.

Part of that appeal comes from the breadth of the lineup. Buyers can choose the turbocharged EcoBoost model, the naturally aspirated V8-powered Mustang GT, or the track-focused Dark Horse, which produces up to 500 horsepower while remaining available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Ford has also continued to embrace enthusiast-focused features, including an electronic drift brake designed for track use, reinforcing the Mustang’s reputation as a driver’s car.

Corvette Continues to Challenge the Best

In the Premium Sporty Car category, the Porsche 911 retained first place, with the Chevrolet Corvette finishing a close second. The Corvette was the only other model in the segment to score above the category average, placing it alongside one of the world’s most respected sports cars.

Chevrolet’s mid-engine Corvette lineup has expanded significantly in recent years. The Stingray offers up to 495 horsepower, the Z06 raises that figure to 670 horsepower, and the range-topping ZR1 pushes output to an extraordinary 1,064 horsepower while targeting a top speed of 233 mph.

Those figures have helped transform the Corvette from a traditional American sports car into a genuine global performance contender, capable of competing with significantly more expensive European rivals.

The Study Measures Owner Satisfaction

The APEAL Study differs from quality and dependability rankings because it focuses on the emotional side of vehicle ownership. J.D. Power asks owners about 37 different aspects of their vehicles, including acceleration, driving dynamics, comfort, technology, styling, visibility, ease of entering and exiting, and the overall enjoyment of ownership during the first three months.

For 2026, the study included responses from 78,514 owners of new model-year vehicles. Overall owner satisfaction reached 858 points out of a possible 1,000, representing the third consecutive annual increase and the largest year-over-year improvement since 2018. Interior quality showed the biggest gains, followed by exterior styling and ease of vehicle access.

Brand Rankings Tell a Similar Story

The individual vehicle awards were supported by strong performances in the overall brand rankings. Among mass-market manufacturers, Chevrolet scored 850 points, and Ford followed closely with 849, both finishing above the segment average of 846. MINI earned the highest overall score among mainstream brands with 875 points.

In the premium category, Porsche led all luxury manufacturers with 896 points, helping explain why the 911 narrowly edged out the Corvette in its segment.

While brand rankings reflect broader ownership satisfaction across an entire lineup, the Mustang and Corvette demonstrated that America’s flagship performance cars remain standout products within their respective categories.

Performance Cars That Continue to Connect With Drivers

Sports cars occupy a much smaller portion of today’s automotive market than they once did, but the latest J.D. Power results suggest they still play an important role in creating emotional connections between drivers and their vehicles.

The Mustang continues to offer classic rear-wheel-drive performance with a choice of turbocharged or V8 power, while the Corvette has evolved into a mid-engine machine capable of supercar-level acceleration and handling.

Although the Porsche 911 once again claimed the top premium ranking, the Corvette’s second-place finish and the Mustang’s category victory demonstrate that American performance cars remain highly competitive where it matters most: satisfying the people who drive them every day.
