AAA is arguably one of the most famous recovery services not just in the United States, but in the entire world. The American Automobile Association, known as AAA or Triple A, has been around since 1902, and millions of Americans are members of the organization.
The company is famed for its recovery services, whereby you call them up and a mechanic will come to your vehicle. If it needs recovering, they will do it, and if it can be fixed on the spot, chances are AAA will do that for you as well.
However, some have debated whether AAA is still needed, and if it is worth paying for the membership still. Modern technology means we can use our phones to call for assistance, or even find out how to get to a shop if one is nearby. So is there a point in AAA still?
The short answer is yes, there is. It might not quite be as important as it was in the early days of motoring, but AAA still has an important role to play in 2026. While technology can help, it can’t replace the person who can come and fix your car.
Modern Technology Can’t Do Everything
It is fair to say that cell phones have made it easier to get assistance on the roadside. You can find the location of the nearest shop, call up for a tow truck, and many more services too. But it hasn’t eliminated the need for full roadside assistance that the likes of AAA can provide.
If you have a flat tire at the roadside, or the car battery goes flat, or the car won’t start in bad weather, AAA can come along and help get you moving again. Plus, the company still has a massive network of workers who are out there ready to help anyone who has broken down. So the odds are that, if you need help from someone from AAA, they will be able to get to you quite quickly.
Insurance Companies Have Not Replaced AAA
Insurance companies and automakers have tried to effectively replace AAA and its services. Automakers go as far as offering assistance programs with some of their models. Insurance companies can offer roadside coverage as an extra on top of their services. So in the eyes of many, a AAA membership isn’t needed if your insurance company can provide the same service.
There is, though, a big advantage to AAA membership. It follows the driver and not the car. If you have multiple cars, if you are a member of ‘Triple A’, then you can call them up for help, and they will track you as an individual. For your cars, all of them will need breakdown insurance individually with whatever plan they are on.
Triple A Is Still Worth the Membership
It is clear that it is still worth being a member of ‘Triple A.’ The benefits it provides outweigh the money you would save by not being a member. It is also easy to forget the company has expanded into other areas too, such as rental car benefits, insurance services, and international driving permits. But if you want good, reliable, friendly, and excellent roadside assistance, why look anywhere else than AAA?
