China has certainly been pushing the limits of technology and automotive manufacturing in recent years. We’ve seen this mostly in the electric car world, with companies producing EVs with incredible range and power, or chargers that can recharge an EV in just a few minutes.
Now, though, China has claimed it’s been able to create a road sweeper that can run at up to 50mph. Footage of it recently emerged on the social media platform X, and it is easily one of the most mesmerizing things you will see all summer.
The video recently began gaining more traction on social media, with some comparing it to a tornado on wheels. In the video, we can see it passing over a dirty portion of a highway, and without giving too much away, we think the results really do speak for themselves.
It certainly leaves a few questions behind. How come nobody else seems to have thought of a roadsweeper this fast? Is it going to become more widespread in China? And could we see more countries develop something similar to keep roads as clean as possible? It is a vehicle that definitely warrants further exploration.

To clarify, the actual sweeping mechanism itself is not what is going on at 50mph. It is the whole system, being designed to work on a vehicle that is travelling at 50mph. That is significant as sweepers traditionally have to drive quite slowly to get roads clear. This can back up traffic behind them and lead to frustration from drivers who want to go faster. Sweeping at 50mph would certainly be welcome for most drivers.
Lin Jian, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China, discussed this very matter in a post on social media platform X. “Operating at up to 80 km/h, it clears metal, rubble, and bulky debris in seconds without disrupting traffic,” he said. “Safety restored. Innovation in motion,” added Jian. It is clear that those behind the project see it as something potentially revolutionary.
The video on X is quite astounding to watch. The road sweeper comes into view, driving at roughly 50mph. On the road, we can see things such as dirt, branches, leaves, all the usual stuff you would expect to see. The sweeper comes flying in, passing from left to right, and after it’s gone, there is seemingly nothing left on the road at all. Everything has been swept up. It is something you have to watch yourself to believe it.
What Did Viewers Think of the Road Sweeper?
Unsurprisingly, those who watched the video were quite taken aback by what they saw. “My country is still trying to fix a pothole since COVID,” one viewer said. “They’re really living in 2050,” another said. It would appear that China has moved the goalposts when it comes to road sweeping. Unsurprisingly, some wondered if it was AI and not real.
If you run it through an AI video detector, it does pass as real. You would also hope that a government official sharing it is also an indicator that this is not an AI road sweeper. Should this be introduced around China, then perhaps it is something other countries will adopt to keep roads clear, while also keeping traffic moving.
