If you come across a Ford Capri that claims to have 3,500hp under the hood, you wouldn’t expect it to be a street car. You’d no doubt think it was just built for the drag strip or to tear up the racetrack. However, this particular Ford Capri featured by the Street Machine YouTube channel is very much street legal.
And yes, it does have a staggering 3,500hp under the hood. The car belongs to Adam Rogash from the channel, and he brought the car to the Allstars Drag and Drive event to try and create a record and show off just how potent the car is.
Rogash wanted to become the first Australian drag and drive car with a six-second average down the 1/4 mile. If you are going to do that, then utilizing over 3,000hp seems like a good place to start.
What makes this even more special is how far the owner had to drive to get to the drag race. The YouTube channel said that Rogash drove over 1,600km, or 994 miles, to take part in the event, so going home without setting a world record was never going to be an option.
What Makes This Incredible Ford Capri Tick?
The big highlight for the Ford is, of course, the incredible amount of power it produces. Much of that comes from its twin-turbocharged V8 engine, with the big-block engine chucking out a ludicrous 3,500hp. That is enough to blast it down the drag strip at truly ferocious speeds. Which was, of course, the point of the recent video.
On day one, Rogash had instant success with this monster of a car. It ran a 6.73-second time down the 1/4 mile, with a top speed of 218mph. That made it the quickest and fastest Drag & Drive pass in Australian history, already shattering the expectations of the team and making it worth them doing the event. However, while that was a highlight of the event, there were a few issues.
During a road trip after the first day, the Ford Capri did suffer from a few niggling problems. It suffered broken rocker arms and valvetrain issues, ironically caused by its long highway cruising. The car, while a street machine, was clearly better suited to blasts down the racetrack. Rogash was keen to stress that it isn’t easy to look after a car with that much power, even when you are just cruising on a highway.
How Fast Did the Ford Capri Go?
After repairing it overnight, the car came back to the event and then made another piece of history. It recorded the fastest 1/8 mile Drag & Drive pass in Australian history, running at 4.501 seconds, as the team looked to secure the six-second average. This was the ultimate goal for the team when they headed to the event. There was, however, still a final run for the Capri at the event before the team headed home.
On the last day, it ran a 6.64-second pass at 219mph, achieving four consecutive six-second passes. This made the car the first Australian Drag & Drive car to ever average six seconds across all of its runs. A final, celebratory pass took place, with the Capri blasting down the drag strip at an amazing 6.56 seconds.
