Volkswagen Has Done The Unexpected And Turned The Volkswagen Jetta Into An Electric SUV

For decades, the Volkswagen Jetta has been one of Volkswagen’s safest bets. It’s been around since 1979, built a reputation as a sensible compact sedan, and largely stuck to the same formula generation after generation.

That’s why this new reveal feels so strange.

Volkswagen has unveiled the all-electric Jetta VSX concept in China, and it looks nothing like the Jetta most people know. Instead of a compact sedan, this version transforms the familiar name into a boxy electric SUV aimed at China’s rapidly growing EV market.

And no, this isn’t some weird rebadge. The Jetta name has operated as its own sub-brand in China since 2019 through Volkswagen’s partnership with FAW-Volkswagen, and now it’s heading deeper into the EV space.

Jetta Means Something Very Different In China

Most buyers outside China still associate Jetta with Volkswagen’s long-running sedan.

In China, it’s a standalone budget-focused brand.

Volkswagen Group and FAW Group launched Jetta as a separate brand back in 2019 to target entry-level buyers. Until now, most of its lineup has consisted of fairly basic gasoline-powered vehicles.

That’s changing quickly.

Volkswagen says Jetta plans to launch four new energy vehicles by 2028, including fully electric models, plug-in hybrids, and range-extended vehicles.

The New SUV Looks Nothing Like An Old Jetta

The new Jetta X concept adopts what Volkswagen calls a “Modern Robust” design language.

That translates to a boxy shape, short overhangs, and styling that feels more like a Rivian R1S than a traditional Jetta sedan.

It also skips traditional Volkswagen badging entirely.

Inside, the SUV goes all-in on screens. A large central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, while a separate passenger display adds even more tech-heavy appeal for Chinese buyers.

There are still a few physical buttons, but not many.

China Wants Different Cars Than Europe

Volkswagen executives have openly admitted Chinese buyers want something very different from European customers.

According to Ralf Brandstätter, Chinese buyers increasingly want AI-focused vehicles with voice controls, connected tech, and smarter interiors.

European buyers tend to care more about durability, driving dynamics, and physical controls.

That difference is becoming more obvious with vehicles like this.

Don’t Expect It In America

If you were hoping Volkswagen would replace the aging Volkswagen Jetta with an electric SUV in the United States, don’t get too excited.

This vehicle is currently planned exclusively for China.

The first next-generation Jetta-branded EV will launch later in 2026, with three more arriving by 2028.

It’s a surprising move, but it also shows how aggressively automakers are adapting to China’s EV market.

And apparently, even the Jetta name isn’t safe from that transformation.
