If you thought your neighborhood group chat was chaotic, wait until you see what happened in DeKalb County, Georgia. An unattended USPS mail truck rolled down a hill, flattened a mailbox, and crashed straight through the brick wall of a home while the mail carrier was reportedly using a nearby porta-potty.

The footage and photos quickly spread online, with commenters turning the bizarre crash into a flood of “special delivery” jokes and mailman memes. But behind the internet humor is a homeowner now dealing with major structural damage and tens of thousands of dollars in repairs.

Local outlet WSB-TV Channel 2 reported that the crash caused major damage to the home, while Grubbs estimated the repair bill could climb past $30,000.

According to the homeowner, the truck rolled backward down a hill without a driver inside before smashing through the front of the residence, leaving a massive hole in the brick exterior and turning an ordinary mail stop into one of the stranger viral vehicle stories making the rounds online right now.

Runaway USPS Truck Crashes Into DeKalb County Home

According to WSB-TV Channel 2, the mail carrier had stopped near Wesley Chapel and was using a neighborhood porta-potty when the postal truck began rolling backward down a hill without a driver inside.

Homeowner John Grubbs told the station that the post office indicated the truck may have experienced a malfunction. With nobody behind the wheel, the truck rolled downhill, picking up speed before crashing across the property.

The vehicle first destroyed a roadside mailbox before plowing directly into the front wall of the brick home. “It sounded like a bomb going off,” Grubbs told local reporters while describing the impact.

Fortunately, nobody inside the home was injured. Grubbs said his sister was upstairs when the truck slammed into the house.

The damage, however, was significant. Photos from the scene show a massive hole torn through the front of the structure, with visible damage to the brick wall after the crash.

USPS Says It Is Working With The Homeowner

Following the crash, WSB-TV reporter Tom Jones contacted the U.S. Postal Service for comment.

A USPS spokesperson told the station the agency takes “great care to protect both postal property and customers’ personal property,” while acknowledging that rare property-damage incidents can happen across its delivery network.

The agency did not immediately commit to covering the full repair costs but said it is working with the homeowner through the federal claims process to reach what it described as a fair resolution.

According to Grubbs, the quote he received from his insurance company was nowhere near his estimated repair cost, leaving him worried about substantial out-of-pocket expenses while the claim process continues.

The Internet Immediately Turned It Into Meme Material

Once footage of the crash started circulating online, commenters wasted absolutely no time making jokes about the runaway mail truck.

One person joked the wreck gave “new meaning to home delivery,” while another dropped the internet’s favorite parking critique: “Can’t park there.”

Others focused on the driver, speculating whether the mail carrier would lose their job after the incident. Some commenters claiming familiarity with postal operations pushed back on that idea, pointing to union protections and aging delivery vehicles that are still widely used in parts of the country.

Still, behind all the memes and jokes is a homeowner now dealing with a badly damaged house after what should have been a routine mail stop turned into a disaster.
