This Mechanic Explains Why You Should Check the Water Pump on Your Lincoln

Lincoln is the luxury division of the Ford brand and has been around in one form or another since 1917. But one mechanic has questioned why you would ever buy one of their cars after discovering something poor while doing some work on someone’s Lincoln.

TikTok creator Foreign Finesse (@foreiginfinesseimports) was doing some work on a Lincoln MKZ, underneath, to be precise, where the engine from the car had been removed to access a water pump that needed repairing. But the mechanic described the work required as a horror show.

While we don’t get to see the specific engine from the Lincoln, the video might act as a warning to owners of the MKZ, and those who own similar Lincoln or Ford models that are likely to have the same engine. Because what was seen in the video is not a pretty sight.

Brown sludge accumulated in a basin underneath the car once the water pump had been removed. And this led to a warning from the mechanic. Because if the water pump in one of these engines goes, it could fill your motor with all sorts of nasty materials.

What the Mechanic Found While Working on the Lincoln

The engine in this particular Lincoln is highly likely to be an EcoBoost V6, a Duratec V6, or an EcoBoost inline-four with a turbocharger. On these engines, produced by Ford, the water pump is buried beneath timing components. On this particular Lincoln, the water pump had failed, and it was causing coolant to leak out of it.

If that happens, it can create a thick brown mixture, which we get a good look at in the video from the TikTok mechanic. The pump, being internally-mounted, is not very accessible, and it took a lot of time and labor costs in order to get to it and get it disassembled. That alone was frustrating for the mechanic, but the brown sludge was also deeply concerning.

“When your water pump goes out, you gotta drop the whole motor from the car, but this is also what you’re filling your motor with,” said the mechanic in his video. In effect, the brown sludge could find its way into the engine if the pump failure is not rectified quickly. That could lead to some serious damage, and in the worst case situations, even lead to an engine failure. Any form of sediment or dirt that gets into the major components could always lead to a big failure.

What Did Ford Fans Say About the Lincoln’s Issues?

Naturally, a video like this is going to cause some debate in the comments. And this one was no exception. “I don’t think ANYBODY wants a Lincoln MKZ buddy,” said one commentator, without providing any evidence as to why. One, however, defended the Lincoln, saying the car is a sleeper, while others just ripped into the problem and slammed it as typical of the Blue Oval.

Plenty, however, came out in defense of the car. “My MKZ was the best car I’ve ever owned,” said one, whereas another said they had an MKZ do over 250,000 miles. However, the video itself was to act as a warning to those who have cars with similar engines. If your water pump has failed, get it looked at as soon as possible.
