These Are the Most Picturesque National Parks in North America, According to a New Study

If “picturesque” means the national parks people feel most compelled to photograph and post, a new Travelbag study gives North America a very clear pecking order. The company analyzed Instagram hashtag counts and TikTok hashtag volumes across a seed list of 79 long-haul parks worldwide, then used those totals to rank the most Instagrammable entries. Within that wider global set, the top North American five were Grand Canyon, Banff, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain, and Joshua Tree.

That lineup feels believable the moment you picture it. One has canyon walls that look unreal at sunrise, another serves up turquoise lakes and serrated peaks, and the rest rotate between granite drama, alpine grandeur, and desert surrealism. For a slideshow, these are strong picks because each one offers a very different visual mood while still feeling instantly iconic.

1. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Grand Canyon took the North American crown in the Travelbag ranking with 4.5 million Instagram hashtags and 208,200 TikTok posts. That result is not especially surprising when you consider how naturally the place lends itself to giant, cinematic frames. Travelbag notes that the canyon stretches 277 miles, reaches up to 18 miles wide, and drops more than a mile deep, which helps explain why even a simple rim viewpoint can feel overwhelming in the best way.

The official National Park Service description supports the hype. NPS calls Grand Canyon a geologic wonder and ancestral homeland, noting that the park encompasses 278 miles of the Colorado River and offers incomparable vistas from both the North and South Rims. For travelers, that matters because the spectacle is not tucked behind a single overlook. The scenery keeps changing as light moves across the rock walls throughout the day.

2. Banff National Park, Alberta

Banff landed second in North America, and its numbers show why it stayed close to the top. Travelbag recorded 3.4 million Instagram hashtags and 277,900 TikTok posts, giving the Canadian favorite an especially strong short-video presence. That makes sense for a place where glacial lakes flash electric blue, mountain ridges rise almost without warning, and roadside pull-offs can look like ready-made wallpapers.

Parks Canada describes Banff as a meeting point of Rocky Mountain peaks, glacial lakes, wildlife, and adventure, and it is Canada’s first national park within the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. The official Icefields Parkway page adds another layer, calling that route one of the most scenic drives in the world. In other words, Banff is not a one-view destination. It is a whole sequence of beautiful moments stitched together by the road.

3. Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite ranked third on the North American list with 3.6 million Instagram hashtags and 190,200 TikTok posts. Even people who have never been can usually recognize its signature shapes, from sheer granite faces to thundering falls in spring. That instant visual identity helps a lot in any social ranking, because one photograph can communicate the place before a caption even begins.

The National Park Service describes Yosemite as a landscape of waterfalls, granite cliffs, giant sequoias, and a vast wilderness area. Its nature pages add that nearly 95 percent of the park is designated wilderness, while the official waterfalls page notes that runoff usually peaks in May or June. All of that gives the California giant an unusually photogenic mix of scale and texture. A camera never has to work very hard there.

4. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Rocky Mountain came in fourth, with 3.6 million Instagram hashtags and 176,500 TikTok posts. It sits just behind Yosemite despite matching it on Instagram volume, which suggests the final score was nudged by slightly lower TikTok activity. Even so, the Colorado favorite clearly has enormous visual pull, especially for travelers who want alpine lakes, high ridgelines, and broad mountain panoramas in a single trip.

NPS introduces Rocky Mountain as a land of extremes spread across 415 square miles, with meadows, glistening alpine lakes, towering peaks, more than 300 miles of hiking trails, and notable wildlife viewing. A lot of the visual appeal comes from that range. One hour can bring quiet water; the next can deliver tundra, elk, or a jagged skyline that feels almost too neat to be real.

5. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Joshua Tree rounds out the top five with 2.3 million Instagram hashtags and 95,400 TikTok posts. Those figures sit below the alpine heavyweights above it, yet the park still made the regional cut because its look is so distinct. Twisted trees, pale boulders, wide skies, and stark light give it a style that feels instantly legible on a phone screen.

The National Park Service frames Joshua Tree as the place where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet, with dark night skies, unusual geologic forms, and a surprising range of plant and animal life. That description captures the appeal neatly. This is not lush or classically pretty in the postcard sense. It is stranger than that, moodier than that, and often unforgettable for exactly those reasons.
