A routine traffic stop in Canutillo, Texas, quickly turned into a foot chase after deputies discovered the driver was wanted on an active warrant. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect attempted to escape on foot but was captured a short time later.

According to Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, deputies initiated the traffic stop around 8:27 p.m. on August 5 in the 7000 block of Fourth Street after noticing a vehicle with defective tail lamps. During the stop, deputies identified the driver as 37-year-old Daniel Ocon.

A records check revealed that Ocon was wanted on an active criminal warrant for evading arrest with a motor vehicle. After deputies became aware of the warrant, officials said Ocon suddenly fled the scene on foot, prompting a brief pursuit.

Deputies quickly caught up with Ocon and took him into custody without further incident. He was later charged with Evading Arrest/Detention with Previous Convictions and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility, where officials said he was being held without bond.

Body Camera Captures Traffic Stop Before Suspect Takes Off Running

In the video, you can see officers from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office speaking with the driver of a vehicle about his taillights. It appears that it wasn’t just one that was out; all of them were.

As part of normal procedure, the officers checked the driver’s license to see if there happened to be anything wrong with it. This is where things get sticky, because the moment the officer reapproached the driver, he bolted.

The clip cuts off shortly after the officers begin to give chase, but ends with the arrest of 37-year-old Daniel Ocon. He was officially charged with evading arrest or detention with previous convictions.

According to the El Paso Register of Actions, his bond hearing on August 7 was canceled, and he was granted a motion for a speedy trial.

Comments Joke That a Broken Taillight Was the Worst Thing to Have With an Active Warrant

The sheriff’s office’s post drew amused reactions from commenters, many of whom questioned the suspect’s decision to drive a vehicle with defective tail lamps while allegedly having an active warrant. One person joked that if someone wanted to avoid law enforcement, having equipment violations on their vehicle probably wasn’t the best strategy.

Others simply reacted to the body camera footage itself, with several leaving laughing emojis or lighthearted comments about the suspect apparently following through on his decision to run. A few commenters also expressed sympathy for the man, while others kept their responses brief with words of encouragement for the deputies.

Although many found humor in the situation, the discussion also served as a reminder of how quickly a routine traffic stop can escalate. What began as a stop for defective equipment ultimately ended with a foot pursuit, an arrest, and additional criminal charges.
