Police officers never really know what they’re going to get when they arrive at a call. For two officers in Hyde Park, New York, their Saturday assignment involved a trapped dog, a storm drain, and apparently a smell worth mentioning in the official police report.
On August 15, Officers Wolf-Davidson and Fein with the Town of Hyde Park Police responded after receiving a report that a dog had become trapped inside a storm drain. Once there, officers quickly located the pup and could hear him barking somewhere inside.
Getting him back out would require someone to actually enter the drain. Officer Wolf-Davidson apparently decided that was going to be him, regardless of what might be waiting down there.
With several Good Samaritans helping officers at the scene, Wolf-Davidson entered the storm drain and eventually reached the frightened dog. Police say the rescue even earned him a few nips on the hand, but everyone ultimately made it back above ground safely.
Officer Goes Into the Storm Drain and Comes Back With a Dog

Footage shared by the Town of Hyde Park Police shows just how much effort went into what might otherwise sound like a pretty straightforward animal rescue. With the dog trapped underground, officers and bystanders had to work together to get him to somewhere they could safely pull him out.
Police gave a special shoutout to Officer Wolf-Davidson for going “above and beyond” during the rescue. That included entering what the department specifically described as a “very smelly storm drain,” which probably isn’t mentioned in the police academy recruitment brochure.
Then there was the dog himself. Being stuck underground with strangers trying to grab you probably isn’t the easiest situation to understand, and police say Wolf-Davidson took a few nips to his hand while getting the pup to safety.
Fortunately, neither the smell nor the teeth stopped the rescue.
Officers were able to get the dog out of the drain and reunite him with his owner, bringing the unusual call to about as happy an ending as anyone could ask for.
Good Samaritans Jump in To Help With the Rescue
The department was also quick to point out that its officers didn’t handle everything alone. Several people at the scene jumped in to assist while officers worked to reach and remove the dog.
Police praised the teamwork displayed during the call, thanking the bystanders who were willing to get involved. The West Clinton Fire District even appeared in the comments afterward to thank both the officers and Good Samaritans for going “above the call of duty.”
Exactly how the dog managed to get himself into the storm drain wasn’t explained in the department’s post. One commenter was wondering the same thing, asking, “How the hell did he get down there?”
Whatever adventure led him underground, the pup thankfully didn’t have to figure out the return trip himself. Between the officers and strangers willing to help, he had a pretty sizable rescue team waiting for him.
Commenters Think Hyde Park Might Need a “Pooch Patrol”
There wasn’t much arguing underneath this particular police post. Instead, commenters overwhelmingly praised Wolf-Davidson, Fein and the people who stopped to help, with one person saying the rescue “made my day and restored my faith in humanity.”
Another commenter suggested Hyde Park Police should have a “Pooch Patrol” float in an upcoming parade because of the department’s work helping animals. Someone else went even further, saying Wolf-Davidson deserved a medal for climbing into the drain.
Of course, there was one coincidence that commenters couldn’t possibly leave alone. “The Wolf rescued the dog!” one person wrote, referring to Officer Wolf-Davidson’s rather appropriate name for the assignment.
Others simply thanked the officers for caring enough to get the pup out safely. As one commenter put it, “The dog thanks you too!” Considering Wolf-Davidson reportedly endured a smelly storm drain and a few bites in the process, we’ll assume those nips weren’t the dog’s official thank-you.
