New York Man’s Fake Inspection Sticker Fools No One, New York State Police Say

A Syracuse man learned an expensive lesson on Interstate 81 this week when a routine traffic stop turned into a full inspection of his questionable windshield decor. New York State Police pulled the driver over in the Town of Homer after spotting traffic violations, and what started as an ordinary stop quickly became something troopers apparently see often enough to joke about on Facebook.

The vehicle in question, a 2013 Subaru Legacy, was sporting an inspection sticker that looked convincing enough at a glance. But a quick check of DMV records told a different story, reported CNY Central. The car’s real inspection had actually expired back in 2024, meaning this driver had been rolling around for roughly two years on borrowed time and a bootleg sticker.

Troopers determined the sticker was fraudulent, which in plain English means somebody either made it, bought it, or borrowed it from a car that actually passed inspection. Either way, it wasn’t fooling anyone with a badge and a DMV database, and that database doesn’t care how good your printer is.

The driver walked away with several traffic tickets, a revoked license, and an impounded Subaru. State police posted photos of the real and fake stickers side by side, and honestly, credit where it’s due, they look pretty similar. Just not similar enough.

The Sticker Scam Nobody Should Try

Vehicle inspection stickers exist for a reason, and it’s not to give bureaucrats something to do. They confirm that your brakes work, your lights function, and your car isn’t leaking anything it shouldn’t be onto the highway. Slapping on a fake one doesn’t fix any of that. It just hides the problem from everyone except the actual road you’re driving on.

State police summed it up pretty well in their own post: “If your vehicle inspection is expired, putting a fake sticker on your windshield is not legal.” Which, fair enough, feels like something that shouldn’t need to be said out loud, but here we are.

Our Take: We get it, inspections cost money and time nobody wants to spend on a Saturday. But a fake sticker is a bet that no trooper will ever look twice, and that bet has terrible odds on a stretch of interstate patrolled regularly. Get the inspection done, or at least get a better forger.

What Happens When You Get Caught

Troopers didn’t just write a ticket and send this guy on his way. The consequences stacked up fast, and each one on its own is enough to ruin a person’s week.

  • Multiple traffic tickets, likely including one specifically for the fraudulent sticker itself.
  • License revocation, meaning this driver can’t legally get behind the wheel of anything until that’s sorted out.
  • Vehicle impoundment, so the Subaru is now parked somewhere far less convenient than his own driveway.

New York State Police wrapped up their post with a line that pretty much says it all: “Nice try, but we check.” Words to live by, or at least words to remember the next time inspection renewal season rolls around and cutting corners starts to look tempting.
