Stealing a road sign might sound like the sort of dumb decision someone makes without thinking too much about the consequences. Stealing enough of them to rack up more than $4,000 in damage and replacement costs, however, is a considerably different story.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office in Nebraska says two people were arrested on August 13 following an investigation into the theft and damage of county and state road signs. Authorities identified the suspects as 24-year-old Wyatt Wegener and 18-year-old Colten Melcher, both from rural Madison County.

According to Sheriff Todd Volk, the arrests followed a concerned citizen’s report to the Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say the current cost of the damage and of replacing the missing signs has already surpassed $4,000, and that figure isn’t final.

Perhaps most concerning is the type of signs that were taken. The Sheriff’s Office says crews have been replacing damaged and missing signs and that all affected STOP and YIELD signs have now been restored.

Two Arrested as Investigation Into Missing Road Signs Continues

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office says Wegener and Melcher were arrested at approximately 10 p.m. on August 13. Both were charged in connection with the theft and damage of Madison County and the State of Nebraska road signs.

Authorities listed charges of felony Theft for Unlawful Taking or Disposition, Criminal Mischief, and prohibited acts involving signs, markers, devices, or notices. The Sheriff’s Office also stressed that its investigation remains ongoing and said additional arrests could potentially be made.

It’s a particularly important request considering what can happen when drivers approach an intersection expecting traffic controls that simply aren’t there. A missing STOP or YIELD sign isn’t just expensive county property that needs to be replaced; it can create a dangerous situation for drivers who have no idea anything is missing until they reach the intersection.

Commenters Say Missing Stop Signs Are No Laughing Matter

Some commenters certainly found humor in the unusual arrests, with one joking, “Here’s your sign,” while others wondered what anyone would even plan to do with that many stolen road signs. Another suggested the pair could have simply bought decorative signs online rather than potentially ending up with felony charges.

However, plenty of people weren’t laughing once the conversation turned toward the potential consequences of removing STOP and YIELD signs. One commenter asked people to imagine a family driving through an unfamiliar intersection at night and getting into a serious crash because the sign that should have been there had been stolen.

Whatever ultimately happens with the charges, the response makes one thing pretty clear. A stolen road sign might look funny hanging on someone’s bedroom wall, but it’s considerably less amusing when another driver reaches that same intersection and discovers there isn’t one there anymore.
