A man recently went to a dealership to buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner, and as it had over 100,000 miles on the odometer, he expected it to be at a reasonable price. So imagine the shock he got when that wasn’t the case.
TikTok user Preston (@prestxn777) posted on his account about the ordeal, with the video obtaining over 394,500 views at the time of writing. The social media user was shocked by the price of the Toyota, with one of the viewers telling him it would be better to just buy a new car.
The 4Runner is one of the most popular Toyota models in the United States. It is regarded as a rugged, tough midsize SUV, and it is just as at home on tarmac as it is off the beaten track. The 2022 model in particular had plenty of very positive reviews.
So if you had the chance to pick up a used model, you’d be excited at potentially buying one for a fraction of the cost of a new model. But as can be seen in Preston’s video, this particular dealership wanted well over $10,000 for it.
How Much Did the Dealership Want for the Toyota?

“So, this is a 2022 Toyota 4Runner, and it has 127,000 miles,” Preston said at the start of the video. It piqued his interest on TikTok, so he decided to go and have a closer look. Externally, it looked in pretty good condition, and it was clearly in the running to be his new car.
However, that feeling changed when he saw the price of the car. “They want $40,000 for it. This is insane. Like, this can’t be real. In what world are these even remotely worth that much? Like, this is insane,” said the TikTok user. He simply could not believe that the dealership wanted that much for the car. And that was amplified upon realizing the car had 127,000 miles on the clock. So this car was very much nowhere near being brand new.
For context, the MSRP at the time for the 2022 4Runner was around the $38,000 mark. So this car is apparently worth nearly its full price, when it has nearly 130,000 miles registered. Something about that doesn’t seem right. The car was still in good shape, bar some peeling and scratches inside. But you wouldn’t expect a used car with 100,000+ miles on the clock to be so expensive.
Is That the Right Price for a 2022 Toyota 4RUNNER?
One caveat is that Toyotas can hold their value very well. This is thanks to the excellent reputation they have for reliability and dependability. In 2025, Toyota was ranked top in terms of reliability by both Kelly Blue Book and Consumer Reports. This data can also reveal that resale prices for Toyotas can be very high.
CarEdge reported that the average depreciation for a Toyota 4Runner is 25 percent after five years, leading to a resale value of around $40,000. In some ways, the high mileage counted against this Toyota, as it proved the car had been super reliable. It’s also difficult to argue with the solid condition the car Preston checked out was in. So the value does, in some ways, make sense. Even if it feels like it should be a lot cheaper.
