GM Hit With Lawsuit Over Faulty 10-Speed Transmission in Trucks and SUVs

General Motors is facing a new class-action lawsuit alleging the automaker knowingly sold trucks and SUVs equipped with defective 10-speed automatic transmissions, despite years of customer complaints, technical service bulletins, and previous recalls tied to the gearbox.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and centers on claims that GM failed to properly disclose transmission problems to consumers before selling or leasing affected vehicles. Plaintiffs argue the company violated both state and federal consumer protection laws by continuing to market vehicles equipped with the transmission while allegedly knowing about persistent defects.

Owners involved in the suit claim the transmission can hesitate during acceleration, shift harshly, slam into gear unexpectedly, or behave unpredictably in normal driving situations. In some cases, plaintiffs say the problems can leave vehicles difficult or unsafe to operate.

The legal action adds another chapter to GM’s ongoing transmission troubles, which have already resulted in recalls and mounting scrutiny from owners across several vehicle lines.

Transmission Complaints Have Been Building For Years

The lawsuit follows a recall expansion announced earlier this year involving GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission family. That recall addressed a defect that could potentially cause rear-wheel lockup while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

According to the complaint, however, the plaintiffs argue GM’s previous fixes and service campaigns did not fully address what they describe as underlying design flaws within the transmission itself.

The suit reportedly covers a range of Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles equipped with the 10-speed automatic gearbox. While the filing currently focuses on California owners and lessees, similar automotive class-action lawsuits often expand if additional plaintiffs join from other states.

The transmission at the center of the case has generated owner complaints for several years, particularly in full-size trucks and SUVs. Drivers have reported issues ranging from rough shifting and delayed engagement to jerking motions and sudden gear changes during everyday driving.

GM Has Not Yet Responded Publicly

At this stage, GM has not issued a public response to the lawsuit. The case remains in its early phases, and it could take months before the court determines whether it will proceed as a certified class action.

The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for repair costs, reduced vehicle value, and other damages allegedly connected to the transmission issues. They are also pushing for changes in how GM markets and sells vehicles equipped with the gearbox.

The controversy is particularly notable because GM co-developed the 10-speed transmission alongside Ford Motor Company. While the lawsuit currently targets GM vehicles, industry observers will likely watch closely to see whether similar legal challenges emerge involving Ford models using related transmission technology.

Expensive Repairs Can Damage Consumer Confidence

Modern multi-speed automatic transmissions have become increasingly complex as automakers chase better fuel economy, smoother performance, and faster acceleration. When functioning properly, GM’s 10-speed transmission has generally been praised for delivering responsive shifts and improved efficiency.

However, transmission failures or erratic behavior can quickly become expensive problems for owners once vehicles move beyond warranty coverage. Repairs involving modern automatic gearboxes often require extensive labor or complete transmission replacement, turning even relatively small defects into major ownership concerns.

For automakers, repeated transmission complaints can also create lasting damage to brand reputation, especially in the highly competitive full-size truck market where reliability remains a major selling point.

The outcome of the lawsuit could ultimately determine whether GM faces additional financial exposure tied to the transmission issue or if the company’s previous recalls and service measures will be viewed as sufficient responses to owner concerns.
