A routine garbage pickup turned into a dangerous situation in Ingleside, Illinois, when a garbage truck became entangled in overhead power lines, trapping the driver inside and causing damage to a nearby home.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred Wednesday afternoon on North Oakside Street, just south of Route 134. Emergency crews from the Fox Lake Fire Protection District and deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded after receiving reports of live wires resting on a garbage truck.
Officials said the truck, operated by waste management company Groot, had its basket raised when it came into contact with overhead utility lines. The impact caused the wires to pull away from a nearby residence, ripping off the home’s electrical box and sections of siding.
Because the wires were believed to still be energized, first responders treated the situation as highly dangerous and took precautions to prevent further injuries.
Driver Remained Trapped Until Power Was Shut Off
With live wires resting on the vehicle, the garbage truck driver had no choice but to remain inside while emergency personnel secured the area.
Firefighters established a safety perimeter and waited for utility workers from ComEd to arrive. A field employee with the electric company was able to de-energize the power lines, allowing the driver to exit the truck safely.
