A violent overnight carjacking in Miami-Dade County involving a stolen 2025 Chevrolet Corvette, a multi-agency police pursuit, speeds reportedly topping 120 mph, and a crash at a gas station has now led to a 16-year-old suspect being charged as an adult, according to reporting from Local 10 News.

Authorities identified the suspect as Kelvin Jamari Thomas. Jail records reviewed by the outlet show the teen is facing multiple felony charges, including armed robbery and carjacking, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and cocaine possession with intent to sell or deliver.

The case traces back to the early morning hours of Feb. 5, when investigators say the suspect confronted occupants of the Corvette at gunpoint before driving off. What followed, according to multiple law enforcement agencies, was a pursuit that stretched across several Miami-Dade communities and escalated into a high-speed chase.

By the time it ended in Miami Gardens, authorities say the incident had involved multiple agencies, triple-digit speeds, and a crash that left the stolen sports car heavily damaged—raising broader concerns about the risks tied to high-speed pursuits and violent carjackings unfolding in populated areas.

Corvette Driver Confronted at Gunpoint

According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department cited by Local 10 News, two victims were sitting inside a gray 2025 Chevrolet Corvette near Northwest Fifth Avenue and Northwest 29th Street in Wynwood shortly after 1 a.m.

Investigators say the suspect approached the driver’s side wearing a black ski mask and a Nike Tech hoodie and was allegedly armed with a handgun. Police say he pointed the weapon at both occupants, ordered them out of the vehicle, and demanded the keys. Faced with the gunman, the victims complied, and the suspect drove away from the Wynwood area in the Corvette.

One detail quickly became critical to the investigation. According to police, one of the victims left a cellphone inside the vehicle, allowing investigators to track its movement using GPS data as the Corvette traveled south through Homestead and later back north toward Miami Gardens.

High-Speed Pursuit Across Miami-Dade

The tracking data triggered a coordinated response involving the Miami Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol, and Miami Gardens Police Department.

A separate arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol states troopers located the Corvette around 2 a.m. near Northwest Seventh Road and Northwest 168th Drive in Miami Gardens after a be-on-the-lookout alert had been issued. When troopers attempted to stop the driver, investigators say the driver accelerated away instead, initiating a high-speed pursuit.

Authorities allege the chase reached extreme speeds through residential areas before moving onto the Palmetto Expressway, with estimates placing the Corvette at roughly 120 mph. The mid-engine sports car reportedly weaved through traffic as law enforcement units attempted to keep pace across multiple roadways before the pursuit ended near Northwest 42nd Avenue and Northwest 183rd Street.

Crash at Shell Station and Arrest

Investigators say the fleeing Corvette crashed near a Shell gas station after colliding with both a police vehicle and a fence, leaving the sports car heavily damaged and bringing the pursuit to a stop.

Authorities allege Thomas then exited the wrecked vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but officers pursued and took him into custody after a short chase. During a search of the scene, police reported recovering a black handgun and a ski mask near the crashed Corvette.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Thomas allegedly made an incriminating statement while being escorted to a patrol vehicle, telling troopers, “I just took the car, that’s it.”

Investigators also claim the teen discarded narcotics while being questioned, allegedly removing a plastic bag containing suspected cocaine from his hoodie pocket and throwing it to the ground during the investigation. Despite the dangerous pursuit and violent circumstances surrounding the alleged carjacking, authorities reported no injuries connected to the incident.

As of Thursday, Thomas was being held at the Metrowest Detention Center, and jail records reviewed by Local 10 News showed that bond information had not yet been listed.
