There are plenty of ways a dinner date can get interrupted, but having a car blast past you at 125 mph on Interstate 95 probably isn’t one most couples expect. For one Florida sheriff, however, the drive to dinner quickly turned into a high-speed arrest.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Rick Staly was traveling with his wife to a dinner meeting shortly before 5 pm on July 31 when a white Dodge Challenger with black racing stripes sped past his unmarked patrol vehicle just south of the State Road 100 exit. Rather than ignoring it because he was technically off duty, Staly immediately began pacing the vehicle.

Using his vehicle’s certified speedometer, the sheriff tracked the Challenger at speeds between 115 and 125 mph for nearly six miles. Authorities say the driver was weaving across all three lanes of traffic and passing within just a few feet of slower-moving vehicles, creating an obvious danger for everyone around him.

Eventually, Staly activated his lights and siren, and the driver pulled over just south of Old Dixie Highway in neighboring Volusia County. The driver, identified as 22-year-old Arul Nayak of Palm Coast, exited the car without incident, placed his keys on the roof, and was taken into custody.

As passing motorists honked their horns in appreciation after watching the reckless driving end, Nayak explained why he was in such a hurry. According to the sheriff’s office, he told Sheriff Staly he had a final pilot’s exam scheduled for Saturday and hoped he would be released from jail in time to make it.

“Driving 125 miles per hour and weaving through three lanes of traffic isn’t a mistake; it’s a decision to gamble with everyone else’s life, including the three passengers sitting in his own car,” Staly said. “This wanna-be pilot was flying fast and low, but he wasn’t in an airplane, and this wasn’t his final exam.”

Nayak was arrested on charges of willful and wanton reckless driving and violating Florida’s Super Speeder law. Because the stop occurred just inside Volusia County, he was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he was held on a $500 bond. According to the sheriff’s office, he has no prior criminal history.

Comments Couldn’t Get Over the Pilot Exam

The mention of the pilot’s exam immediately became the focus of the comment section. Many questioned whether someone accused of driving at those speeds should be trusted in an aircraft, with one commenter writing, “If this guy can’t make intelligent decisions while he’s driving, what makes him think he’ll make intelligent decisions while flying a plane?” Another joked that the sheriff may have “saved someone’s life and doesn’t even know it.”

Several commenters also wondered whether the incident could affect the driver’s aviation future. Some claimed the FAA should review the arrest before issuing any pilot certificate, while others joked that his “wings had been clipped” before he ever earned them. A handful poked fun at the situation, suggesting he had mistaken Interstate 95 for a runway or was simply “practicing” for his flight test.

Not everyone focused on the driver, though. Some questioned Sheriff Staly’s decision to pace the vehicle with his wife riding along, asking whether maintaining speeds above 100 mph was worth the risk. Others defended the sheriff, pointing out that law enforcement officers are never truly off duty and praising him for stopping what they viewed as an extremely dangerous driver before anyone was hurt. One witness even commented that the Challenger “passed me like I was sitting still,” reinforcing just how fast the vehicle was traveling.
