A 21-year-old five-time convicted felon is back in custody after deputies say a domestic violence investigation escalated into a high-speed pursuit and foot chase in Hillsborough County, Florida. The suspect fled from deputies before stop sticks sent his vehicle into a ditch, forcing him to continue his attempted escape on foot.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on X, deputies located Tyrome Huff Jr. near the 1500 block of West Brandon Boulevard on Aug. 13. Authorities said Huff was wanted in connection with domestic violence offenses involving allegations that he threatened a woman and pointed a firearm directly at her.
When deputies attempted to stop his vehicle, Huff took off at a high rate of speed. Rather than immediately pursuing him closely on the ground, the sheriff’s office’s Aviation Unit tracked the vehicle from above while deputies positioned themselves ahead of the suspect.
Ground units eventually deployed stop sticks, and Huff’s vehicle left the roadway before ending up in a ditch. Authorities said Huff then abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, but deputies caught him and took him into custody.

Footage released by the sheriff’s office shows the operation unfolding from the perspective of its Aviation Unit as deputies work to bring the pursuit to an end. With a helicopter keeping track of Huff’s location, ground units were able to coordinate their response without losing sight of the fleeing vehicle.
The pursuit eventually came to an abrupt end after deputies successfully deployed stop sticks. Huff’s vehicle traveled into a ditch, but authorities said the crash wasn’t enough to end his attempt to get away.
Huff reportedly jumped from the vehicle and ran before deputies apprehended him. The sheriff’s office said a firearm was also recovered during the incident.
Authorities described Huff as a five-time convicted felon. He now faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery by strangulation, two counts of violating a domestic violence injunction, felon in possession of a firearm, high-speed fleeing to elude, and felon in possession of ammunition.
As with all criminal cases, the charges against Huff are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Comments Can’t Get Past 21-Year-Old Already Having Five Felony Convictions
While plenty of commenters praised deputies for bringing the pursuit to an end, one detail dominated much of the reaction: Huff is only 21 years old and is already described by authorities as a five-time convicted felon. One person simply questioned how someone could accumulate that many felony convictions by such a young age.
Others were more frustrated by the fact that someone with that criminal history was back on the streets in the first place. Several commenters questioned how previous cases against Huff had been handled, with some calling for him to remain incarcerated this time and another bluntly suggesting authorities should “throw away the keys.”
Not everyone focused exclusively on Huff’s criminal history. Some praised the sheriff’s office for the teamwork involved in the arrest, particularly the coordination between the Aviation Unit and deputies on the ground as stop sticks were deployed.
Still, the suspect’s age and reported record remained the biggest talking point. For many commenters, the arrest raised almost as many questions about how a 21-year-old could already have five felony convictions as it did about the dramatic pursuit that put him back in custody.
