Delta Tops Annual Airline Rankings Again as Travelers Prioritize Reliability

Airlines still market bigger seats, polished lounges, and premium extras as if those are the main things passengers remember. In reality, the annual scorecards that get the most attention keep circling back to something less glamorous: whether the trip actually works.

In The Points Guy’s 2025 U.S. airline rankings, published on June 19, Delta finished first for the seventh straight year. The report evaluated the 10 largest U.S. carriers across four main categories: reliability, cost and reach, experience, and loyalty.

That result fits a broader pattern in how travelers judge a flight. J.D. Power said delays were the most common issue among passengers who reported problems in its 2025 North America Airline Satisfaction Study, and the same release said customers who did not encounter a problem scored airlines 125 points higher on trust.

That is why a ranking tilted toward steadiness still lands so well. The seats, snacks, and loyalty perks matter, but the basic promise of air travel is still simple: get people where they are going with as little disruption as possible.

1. This was not a niche win built on one statistic

Delta’s latest win did not come from sweeping every single category. The Points Guy said the theme behind the carrier’s seventh straight victory was consistency, noting that other airlines outperformed it in certain areas, including affordability and loyalty value.

That breadth is what makes the result more interesting than a simple on-time leaderboard. The ranking looked at delays, cancellations, involuntary denied boardings, mishandled baggage, mishandled mobility devices, route networks, loyalty-program value, lounge access, family seating policies, and Wi-Fi.

Once all of that was added together, Delta finished ahead of United in second and Southwest in third. The top line was familiar, but the path to it was much broader than a single operations metric.

2. Reliability carried the most weight for a reason

The strongest signal in the methodology was obvious from the start. The Points Guy gave reliability the heaviest weight at 30%, arguing that getting passengers to their destination safely and on time remains one of the most basic parts of a good trip.

Its reliability category measured timeliness, cancellations, involuntary denied boardings, mishandled baggage, and mishandled wheelchairs or scooters. Delta led that category outright, with Hawaiian second, Allegiant third, and Southwest fourth.

The same report also noted that the industrywide cancellation rate was 1.36% in 2024, slightly higher than 2023’s 1.29% but still well below 2022’s 2.71%. That context helps explain why operational strength still carries so much weight in annual rankings.

3. Delta had hard performance data behind the reputation

One reason the result carries weight is that Delta did not glide through a trouble-free year. The Points Guy said the airline’s reliability edge in 2024 held up despite the severe disruption that followed the July CrowdStrike outage.

Independent punctuality data reinforced that picture. In January 2026, Delta said Cirium named it North America’s most on-time airline for 2025 for the fifth consecutive year.

According to that release, 80.9% of Delta’s 1.8 million flights arrived within 15 minutes of schedule. Delta also said it was the only U.S. carrier to land in Cirium’s global top 10 for on-time performance.

4. Rivals improved, but Delta still set the pace

The 2025 ranking was not a story of one brand coasting while everyone else stood still. United climbed to second overall after improving in both reliability and passenger experience, while Southwest jumped two spots to third.

The report tied Southwest’s rise in part to the industry’s lowest cancellation rate in 2024, which gave the carrier a major boost. Elsewhere, Hawaiian gained ground after a rebound in operational performance, while American posted the steepest year-over-year drop and fell to seventh.

That movement makes Delta’s repeat finish look less like inertia and more like an ability to hold its ground while competitors shifted around it. It stayed steady while the order behind it changed.

5. Travelers keep rewarding the airlines that simply work

The bigger takeaway is less about bragging rights and more about what passengers seem to value most. J.D. Power said fewer than 10% of North American passengers reported problems in its 2025 study, but among those who did, delays were the most common issue.

The same release found that 81% of customers who described their experience as perfect said they would definitely fly that airline again, compared with just 4% among those who described it as poor. That helps explain why a ranking tilted toward operational steadiness still resonates.

Delta was not crowned because it was the cheapest option or because every traveler loves SkyMiles. It finished first again because, when the final math was done across reliability, experience, loyalty, and network strength, it kept delivering the thing many flyers care about most: a trip that runs the way it is supposed to.
