Losing power at home can be a nightmare and incredibly stressful. It can happen during storms and bad weather, and losing power to things like the fridge or freezer can be even more annoying. But if you have a Ford F-150 Lightning EV, you can save yourself some stress.
Modern electric vehicles can often power appliances, and even entire homes, if the need ever arises. One Reddit user tested this when they lost power at home with their Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck.
The truck’s owner, Reddit user ufsandcastler, posted on the r/F150Lightning subreddit that they lost power for 106 hours during an outage. That is more than four days without proper electricity. But instead of letting food go to waste, they took their pickup truck and put it to good use.
The truck’s owner used it to power the vital appliances at home for the full outage time. That included appliances such as the fridge, freezer, the air-conditioning unit, and even TVs and lights. And the best part? The F-150 Lightning still had over 30% battery when the power came back on.

According to the Reddit user, the truck could power plenty of appliances. These included the fridge, freezer, TVs, lights, a mini air conditioner, a tankless water heater, an espresso machine, and a toaster oven. They used a generator during Hurricane Sally, but said the pickup truck was much easier. They just set it up, turned it on, and left it to do its work.
“Set it and forget it,” said the Reddit user. When asked how they got the car connected to the house and the appliances, the Reddit user said they just used extension cords. “Bought 30 A one for the AC mini (those on wheels that you put the vent on window) and extension cords,” they said. So it was a simple setup, and it appears it worked very well.
Reddit users admired how they kept their house powered for so long. “I didn’t think we would be able to power the house with the lightning because we didn’t get the one with the 240 plug, so this is encouraging. We really just wanted to keep the gas furnace running after losing power for a week last winter,” said one Reddit user. Incredibly, the truck still had 35 percent of its battery left when electricity was restored, from the original 99% it had when it was first connected to the house.
It Isn’t All Good News for the F-150 Lightning

While this is great news for F-150 Lightning owners, it hasn’t been all good news for the pickup truck. In December 2025, Ford discontinued its electric pickup truck.
The electric side of the business was losing money, and the F-150 Lightning had suffered a production halt earlier in the year. It decided to focus on more affordable EVs, with a smaller electric truck at a lower price on the way.
