It doesn’t appear that people in Denver are fans of the Waymo robotaxis popping up all over the city. Six weeks after they were introduced, Waymo is having to deal with people egging the cars as they try to go about their business.

The situation is truly bizarre, and it’s made worse by the fact that Waymo doesn’t know who has been doing it to their cars. The vandalizing of the cars began almost immediately after they were introduced to the city in September 2026, and it’s become national news.

First-hand reports from customers who have ordered Waymo taxis have shed some light on the strange nature of the incidents. One customer, a Denver local, said that after his Waymo pulled up alongside him, another car pulled up alongside him and threw an egg at the Waymo before it began chasing the Waymo.

Self-driving cars and robotaxis have proven controversial. Not everyone is a fan of them, and there have been some accidents caused by the cars since they were introduced. But chasing down taxis and throwing eggs at them is certainly a new way for people to express their displeasure.

Eggs Have Been Splattered All Over Waymo Taxis

Local Denver news has reported on the egg attacks. Jeff Hunley, a Denver local, ordered a Waymo on September 24th. As soon as it arrived, another car pulled up alongside the taxi and threw an egg at the car. The car then chased the Waymo, with Jeff inside, and pulled in front of it, blocking its path.

The driver then got out of his car and threw more eggs at the Waymo, with Jeff still sitting inside. Waymo would reward Hunley with credits for the inconvenience, though the customer was probably hoping for something a bit more. But this isn’t the only time Waymo customers have had their taxi egged, with customers concerned about how hostile others have been towards them.

Connor McGriff, another local, ordered a Waymo taxi on October 11th. Within minutes of him getting in it, a large number of eggs were thrown at the side of his taxi, with two hitting the windshield. The car carried on as if nothing had happened, but McGriff was concerned about how hostile people were becoming towards the robotaxis. On the face of it, it does seem like a strange overreaction to the Waymo vehicles, and it has left customers wondering how people can have so much disdain for the taxis.

Why Are People So Unhappy About the Waymo Taxis?

The incidents have certainly meant customers like Hunley are slightly more wary of using the taxis if incidents like this keep happening. There has been plenty of resistance to the vehicles since Waymo began rolling them out in California cities. In 2024, one Waymo was vandalized in San Francisco, eventually being set ablaze and destroyed by the fire. Other cities have seen Waymos spray-painted and smashed up, as well as having eggs thrown at them by passing motorists.

In an interview with FOX31 Denver, Hunley said that violence and vandalism towards the vehicles aren’t the answer. If people have a problem with Waymo, they should express it another way, perhaps even get in touch with the company. There have been some incidents with the vehicles in the past. System errors have caused glitches that could potentially have endangered those inside the Waymos, bystanders, and other motorists. It is a bizarre way to express your frustration towards a driverless car.
