At Guessing Headlights, we use the phrase “Florida Man” a lot, and there’s a good reason for it. Over the years, it has become internet shorthand for the kind of bizarre, head-scratching stories that seem almost too strange to be real. As someone born and raised in Miami, I can tell you those stories certainly don’t represent everyday life in the Sunshine State, but they do make for some unforgettable headlines.

There’s also a practical reason Florida dominates this corner of the internet. Florida’s broad public records laws make it easier for journalists to access arrest reports, booking information, body camera footage, and other records than in many other states. Florida sheriff’s offices are also known for being remarkably transparent, frequently sharing detailed case updates and often doing so with a sense of humor.

Their social media posts regularly blend public information with witty commentary, making some of the state’s strangest stories even more memorable. Compare that with states like California or Washington, where booking photos often aren’t publicly released, and it’s easy to see why so many “Florida Man” stories make national headlines.

In June, we covered plenty of memorable Florida Man stories, some hilarious, some unbelievable, and a few that made us wonder what on earth was going through someone’s mind. To give our readers a look back, I’ve rounded up my five favorites from the month.

Each of the following articles was published in June, though the incidents themselves didn’t all happen during the same month. Under each headline is a brief summary, along with a link to the full story if you’d like to dive deeper.

Police Drew Guns on a Florida Man After Mistaking a Gas Pump Nozzle for a Handgun

A body camera video from an August 2025 incident at a Florida gas station resurfaced on Reddit earlier in June, reigniting debate over police conduct. The footage shows a Leon County deputy approaching a man at a Circle K with his weapon drawn after mistaking a gas pump nozzle for a firearm.

The officer believed the man was pointing a weapon toward the convenience store, but the man explained that he was simply trying to signal to the cashier that his pump had not been activated after he paid. Store employees later confirmed that the man was a regular customer and had not caused any problems.

Although the man immediately complied with the officer’s commands, he later expressed frustration over the encounter, arguing that he had been unfairly targeted. The resurfaced video has since generated hundreds of comments on Reddit, with many users criticizing the officer’s actions and questioning how the gas pump nozzle could have been mistaken for a gun. It was a pretty insane one to read through.

Florida Man Arrested After Firing Shots at Sheriff’s Drone, Which Recorded All the Action

A Florida man is facing charges after authorities say he pointed a weapon at a law enforcement drone and fired during an active response in Lehigh Acres. According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies had launched a drone as part of the agency’s Drone as First Responder program when operators observed a group of people holding what appeared to be a rifle.

Investigators say one man, later identified as Elvin Antonio Callejas-Serrato, pointed the weapon, identified as a BB gun, at the drone and fired two shots before deputies already in the area moved in and detained him.

What really made this one stick out to me was the fact that the suspect pretty blatantly wanted to try to shoot the drone down. Like, he looked at it, aimed the BB gun, and then fired. I’m not sure what he thought was going to happen next, and that’s the truly odd part.

Florida Man Randomly Shows up to Traffic Stop, Allegedly Poses as Driver’s Lawyer

A Florida man is facing multiple charges after police say he falsely represented himself as an attorney during a traffic stop on Interstate 95 in West Melbourne. According to the West Melbourne Police Department, officers were arresting a female driver after allegedly finding drugs in her vehicle when 30-year-old Derek Schaufus unexpectedly arrived at the scene dressed in a suit and tie, claiming to be the woman’s legal representative. Authorities said Schaufus questioned officers about probable cause and reportedly spent roughly 30 minutes arguing with them and attempting to negotiate on the driver’s behalf.

Investigators later determined that Schaufus was allegedly using the name of a real attorney who had previously represented him in a DUI case and was unable to provide a valid bar number when asked. Police say the actual attorney confirmed Schaufus was not him, while the arrested driver told officers she had previously been in contact with Schaufus, who allegedly offered legal advice and planned to charge her $250 for his services. Schaufus was subsequently arrested and charged with misrepresenting himself as qualified to practice law, obstruction by a disguised person, and resisting an officer without violence. All charges remain allegations unless proven in court.

That whole scenario is weird and perfectly fits the larger-than-life “Florida Man” caricature. Who would even think to walk up to an officer during a traffic stop and pretend to be a lawyer? If you were supposed to be so good at pretending to be a lawyer, then how could you not know that the cop would ask for your bar number?

Florida Man Conducts Fake Traffic Stop on an Undercover Deputy, Revealing a Big Scandal

A Florida man was arrested after authorities say he attempted to impersonate a law enforcement officer by using illegal emergency lights on his SUV only to target an undercover sheriff’s vehicle. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, 46-year-old Nadi Jabari was driving a black Chevrolet Suburban equipped with red and blue emergency lights on U.S. Highway 301 North in Thonotosassa on June 24, 2026, when he tried to conduct a traffic stop on an undercover sheriff’s unit. Deputies quickly intervened and performed a legitimate traffic stop on Jabari instead.

During a search of the vehicle, investigators say they found the active emergency light setup, an additional undeployed light bar, and a firearm. Jabari was arrested and charged with false personation, unlawful use of blue lights, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing. Following the arrest, Sheriff Chad Chronister reminded drivers that if they are ever unsure whether a traffic stop is legitimate, they should continue to a well-lit public area and call 911 to verify the officer’s identity.

I think this story speaks for itself. Pretending to be a cop is probably one of the worst things you can do in front of another cop, not really, but you get the idea.

Florida Man Leaves Jail, Steals SUV From Courthouse Parking Lot and Lands Right Back Behind Bars, Deputies Say

Florida authorities say a 23-year-old Miami Gardens man was arrested for a second time in just days after allegedly stealing an SUV and leading law enforcement on another pursuit in the Florida Keys. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Jefry Julian Chaucanes Vasquez was released from jail on June 12 following an earlier arrest tied to a high-speed chase.

Investigators said that, later the same day, he burglarized a vehicle in the Plantation Key Courthouse parking lot, stole an iPhone charger, took a Ford SUV from the same lot, and fled from authorities after a traffic stop near Mile Marker 83 on U.S. 1.

The pursuit ended near Mile Marker 61, where Chaucanes Vasquez was taken back into custody. The arrest came just three days after deputies say he led officers on a separate chase that reached speeds of up to 125 mph before tire deflation devices brought the pursuit to an end. Authorities have filed multiple charges in connection with both incidents, including burglary, theft, DUI, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, and drug-related offenses.

It’s almost as though this particular suspect really wanted to stay in jail. Were the conditions really good, or something?
