Most people spend their first few hours after being released from jail calling family, finding a ride home, or figuring out what comes next. According to Florida authorities, a 23-year-old Miami Gardens man allegedly had a very different plan.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says Jefry Julian Chaucanes Vasquez was released from jail on June 12 following an earlier arrest in the Florida Keys. Before the day was over, investigators say he had burglarized a vehicle in the Plantation Key Courthouse parking lot, stolen an iPhone charger, taken a Ford SUV, and led law enforcement on yet another pursuit down U.S. 1.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol arrested Chaucanes Vasquez after the stolen SUV fled a traffic stop near Mile Marker 83. The vehicle was eventually stopped near Mile Marker 61, where he was taken back into custody.
What makes the case particularly unusual is that authorities say all of this happened just hours after Chaucanes Vasquez walked out of jail.
His earlier arrest stemmed from a June 9 pursuit on the same highway. According to NBC 6 South Florida, deputies attempted to stop a Mazda sedan after observing it traveling about 90 mph near Mile Marker 80. Investigators say Chaucanes Vasquez fled, reaching speeds of up to 125 mph before deputies used tire deflation devices to stop the vehicle.
Authorities charged him in that case with DUI, fleeing and eluding, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, reckless driving, and dangerous/excessive speeding. Deputies also reported finding two THC vape cartridges in his possession.
Neither incident resulted in serious injuries, according to authorities.

Deputies Say the Courthouse Parking Lot Was the Starting Point
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Friday’s incident began around 5 p.m. when deputies were notified that a Ford SUV had fled from the Florida Highway Patrol near Mile Marker 83 after a stop for reckless driving.
FHP handled the primary investigation while Monroe County deputies assisted in the response. The SUV was eventually stopped near Mile Marker 61, where Chaucanes Vasquez was taken into custody and transported to jail.
Investigators say the pursuit was only part of the story.
Before the chase, deputies allege Chaucanes Vasquez burglarized another vehicle parked at the Plantation Key Courthouse and stole an iPhone charger. Authorities say he then stole the Ford SUV from the same parking lot. The Sheriff’s Office charged him with burglary of an unoccupied vehicle and theft, while FHP filed additional charges related to the pursuit and stolen vehicle.
The Earlier Arrest Came Just Days Before
The June 12 arrest came only three days after Chaucanes Vasquez was arrested following a separate pursuit in the Florida Keys.
According to NBC 6 South Florida, deputies observed a Mazda sedan traveling about 90 mph near Mile Marker 80 shortly before midnight on June 9. When deputies attempted a traffic stop, investigators say the vehicle fled and reached speeds of approximately 125 mph while passing other motorists.
Deputies ultimately used tire deflation devices near Mile Marker 83 to stop the vehicle. Chaucanes Vasquez was arrested and booked into jail on multiple charges.
