In recent years, Toyota Motor Corporation has ranked among the world’s largest companies across key metrics, including vehicle sales, revenue, market capitalization, and profitability.

By nearly every measure, the Japanese manufacturer dominates the industry, and one study in particular confirms that for reliability across multiple categories, Toyota remains the brand to beat.

The 2026 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study has been released. The study measures vehicle reliability after three years of ownership using problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). Because reliability spans a wide range of factors, the researchers accounted for this by gathering detailed feedback “across nine major vehicle categories: climate; driving assistance; driving experience; exterior; features/controls/displays; infotainment; interior; powertrain; and seats” from owners of 2023 model-year vehicles.

Compact Car: Toyota Corolla

Among compact cars, the Toyota Corolla stands out as the most dependable. The model consistently ranks near the top of its class, earning a long-standing reputation for reliability, durability, and strong value for money.

In an era where long-term ownership matters more than ever due to rising costs and maintenance considerations, the Corolla offers a wide range of variants to suit different needs.

For those prioritizing efficiency, the Corolla Hybrid models deliver impressive fuel economy, while the Corolla SE provides extra practicality and a more engaging driving experience. For a brand-new machine with six trims available for the 2026 model year, the Corolla has an option to fit virtually any driver’s needs.

Midsize Car: Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is one of America’s most popular mid-size sedans, thanks to its practicality, reliability, and overall value. Toyota continues to set the benchmark, offering powertrains that include both hybrid and gasoline engines, ensuring there’s a model to suit a wide range of drivers.

The 2023 Camry, in particular, performs well across different driving conditions, whether navigating city streets or cruising on the highway. The 2023 Camry Hybrid impresses with an estimated 51 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on the highway, making it an efficient and versatile choice for everyday use.

Compact Premium Car: Lexus IS

The Lexus IS earned both the Most Dependable Model honor and the Compact Premium Car award, as Lexus topped all brands for a fourth straight year. Though it doesn’t wear a Toyota badge, Lexus is the company’s luxury division — and its success further underscores Toyota’s broader dominance.

In J.D. Power’s Brand Ranking, Lexus recorded just 151 problems per 100 vehicles, topping the charts overall and leading the premium segment. With nearly half of all Lexus vehicles sold in North America in 2025, the figures show year after year that American buyers continue to value Japanese build quality.

To put that into perspective, homegrown brand Cadillac followed in second place with 175 PP100, while Stuttgart-based Porsche ranked third at 182 PP100. Once again, it was a decisive victory for the Far East.
