A semi-truck hauling several Tesla vehicles caught fire late Friday night in Hobe Sound, forcing the closure of both Florida’s Turnpike and Interstate 95 while firefighters worked to control the blaze.
According to WPTV, the fire broke out near mile marker 120 on Florida’s Turnpike shortly before 11 p.m. Martin County Fire Rescue said the vehicle carrier was transporting six Teslas when it caught fire.
By the time first responders arrived, the trailer was fully engulfed, though the driver had already disconnected the truck from the burning trailer. No injuries were reported.
The fire caused major traffic problems overnight. Officials initially closed all northbound and southbound Turnpike lanes in the area. Martin County Fire Rescue later said shifting winds forced the closure of northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 as well.
Several State Agencies Were Notified After the Fire
The closures were lifted by Saturday morning, but the incident was significant enough to prompt multiple state agencies to be notified.
In an update shared by Martin County Fire Rescue, officials said the State Fire Marshal, the Department of Environmental Protection, the State Watch Office, and the Department of Transportation had all been notified. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
CBS12 reported that it was not immediately clear how many of the vehicles were involved in the fire.
Authorities have confirmed that a car hauler carrying Teslas caught fire. They have not said whether the fire started with one of the vehicles, the trailer, the tractor, or another source.
Readers Quickly Focused on the Tesla Cargo
While fire officials kept their updates focused on road closures, safety, and the ongoing investigation, many readers immediately focused on the vehicles being transported.
Some commenters treated the incident as another reason to avoid electric vehicles, raising concerns about battery fires, garage safety, and the amount of water needed to fight EV-related fires. Others pushed back, arguing that vehicle fires are not limited to electric cars and that the cause had not yet been released.
A few readers made the same point that investigators have not answered yet: the post said the hauler was carrying Teslas, not that a Tesla caused the fire.
That became one of the more important takeaways from the reaction. The images were dramatic, and the Tesla detail was always going to draw attention, but the official record remains limited. A semi-truck car hauler caught fire while transporting several Teslas. The cause is still under investigation.
A Similar Fire Happened in California Last Year
The Florida fire may remind some readers of a 2025 incident in California, where a car carrier loaded with Tesla vehicles caught fire on the 5 Freeway in Sylmar.
In that case, ABC7 reported that a transporter carrying eight Teslas caught fire, producing toxic smoke that shut down southbound lanes. Six of the vehicles were reportedly burned, and crews spent hours working the scene.
The Hobe Sound case is still much less clear. Officials have not said whether any battery packs were involved, whether hazardous runoff occurred, or what ignited first.
The Big Question Remains Unanswered
For now, the most unusual part of the Hobe Sound fire is the scale of the response. One vehicle carrier fire caused closures on both Florida’s Turnpike and I-95, two of the busiest routes through that part of South Florida.
The good news is that no injuries were reported. The remaining question is what started the fire in the first place.
