Tesla may finally be preparing to bring its long-wheelbase Model Y L to North America. According to a new report by Not A Tesla App, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans, production of the six-seat electric crossover could begin as early as late summer, potentially giving American families a larger alternative within Tesla’s lineup.
The Model Y L was first introduced in China, where it quickly attracted attention for combining the practicality of a three-row SUV with the efficiency and performance that have helped make the standard Model Y one of the world’s best-selling electric vehicles. Since then, the stretched version has expanded into several international markets.
While Tesla has not officially confirmed a North American launch, recent testing activity and reported factory preparations suggest the company may be moving closer to introducing the model in the United States. If those plans remain on schedule, deliveries could begin before the end of the year.
The timing would also fill a notable gap in Tesla’s lineup. With the Model X becoming increasingly niche and significantly more expensive, the Model Y L could offer a more affordable option for buyers seeking additional passenger space.
Production Reportedly Planned for Texas
Reports claim Tesla is targeting an August or September launch window for the Model Y L in North America. Sources indicate the vehicle would be produced at Gigafactory Texas, where tooling modifications are reportedly underway to support manufacturing of the longer-wheelbase variant.
The timeline remains unofficial and could change depending on production readiness, certification requirements, or testing schedules. Tesla has a well-documented history of adjusting launch targets, making any reported timeline subject to revision.
Nevertheless, several developments suggest progress is being made. Prototype vehicles have been spotted testing on public roads in the United States, while observers have also reported seeing Model Y L-related components and development vehicles at Tesla facilities.
A Larger Model Y Designed for Families

The most significant change is the vehicle’s extended dimensions. Compared with the standard Model Y, the Model Y L adds approximately 150 millimeters to the wheelbase and 179 millimeters to its overall length.
Those extra dimensions allow Tesla to create a true six-passenger configuration featuring individual captain’s chairs in the second row. The resulting 2-2-2 seating layout is designed to improve passenger comfort and provide easier access to the third row.
The second-row seats are expected to offer heating, ventilation, and multiple adjustment functions. Third-row occupants also benefit from increased space compared with the optional third-row seating currently available in the standard Model Y.
Tesla has reportedly paired the larger cabin with suspension revisions intended to improve ride comfort, further emphasizing the vehicle’s family-focused mission.
Familiar Performance With Added Practicality

Despite the larger dimensions, performance is expected to remain largely unchanged from the all-wheel-drive Model Y currently sold in many markets.
International specifications suggest acceleration remains strong, with the Model Y L capable of reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) in roughly 4.5 seconds. A U.S.-spec version would likely deliver a similar 0-60 mph time while retaining competitive range figures.
The Chinese-market version carries a range rating nearly identical to the standard all-wheel-drive model sold there. If Tesla follows the same formula in North America, the Model Y L could offer an EPA-estimated range close to the current Model Y Premium AWD’s 327-mile rating.
A larger 16-inch central touchscreen is also expected to be included, bringing the cabin experience closer to Tesla’s higher-end offerings.
Pricing Could Bridge the Gap to the Model X
Pricing remains unconfirmed, but international market positioning offers clues about where the Model Y L may fit within Tesla’s lineup.
In China, the long-wheelbase version carries a modest premium over the comparable all-wheel-drive Model Y. Applying a similar pricing strategy in the United States would place the Model Y L at approximately $54,000, or about $4,000 above the existing Model Y Premium AWD.
That would create an attractive middle ground between Tesla’s mainstream crossover and the considerably more expensive Model X.
For buyers who need additional seating capacity but don’t require the Model X’s premium features, the Model Y L could emerge as one of Tesla’s most practical offerings.
An Important Addition to Tesla’s Lineup
The Model Y has become the cornerstone of Tesla’s global sales success, and a larger family-oriented version could broaden its appeal even further.
Demand for three-row crossovers continues to grow worldwide, particularly among buyers seeking a balance of passenger space, efficiency, and technology. The Model Y L appears designed to address that market directly without dramatically increasing cost or complexity.
For now, prospective buyers will have to wait for official confirmation from Tesla. If reports prove accurate, however, the long-wheelbase Model Y could arrive in North America sooner than many expected, giving families a new electric alternative just in time for the fall buying season.
