Chino police have since arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. The three people hospitalized are expected to survive, which is about the only piece of good news to come out of the incident. Neighbors reportedly described a chaotic scene, with at least one bystander noting that some people at the gathering didn’t immediately move their children to safety, a detail that speaks to just how fast things can spiral when illegal or oversized fireworks are involved.
Southern California wasn’t alone in dealing with holiday fireworks trouble. In New York, a Fourth of July celebration turned unsettling when gunfire broke out near a crowd watching fireworks in Coney Island, injuring eight people, including young children. Police are still searching for the shooter, and city officials have vowed a firm response. It’s a stark reminder that the holiday’s biggest risks aren’t always the fireworks themselves.
Meanwhile, a bit further north, the fireworks did plenty of damage on their own. A portion of the Brooklyn Bridge briefly caught fire during New York City’s famous fireworks show, caught on camera by several bystanders who were just trying to enjoy the display.
A Delta Flight Gets an Unwanted Firework Escort
Perhaps the most bizarre incident of the weekend happened in the sky over Chicago. A Delta flight landing at Midway International Airport reported being struck by a stray firework while on approach. You could hear the pilot calmly radio the tower to report the hit before continuing the landing without further issue.
Air travel already asks pilots to deal with weather, birds, and the occasional drone. Add “rogue bottle rocket” to the list, apparently.
Fireworks Injuries Are Nothing New, But Timing Matters
Every year, emergency rooms brace for a spike in fireworks-related injuries around the holiday, and consumer-grade fireworks purchased legally are frequently part of the problem when handled carelessly or in large quantities.
The Chino incident, involving what’s been described as a significant amount of fireworks, fits a pattern safety officials have warned about for years: it’s not just the professional shows that carry risk.
