The launch of the Rivian R2 is entering a new phase as reservation holders begin receiving invitations to configure their vehicles. While that should be an exciting milestone for customers who have been waiting since reservations first opened, the rollout is creating frustration among some early adopters.
Reports from reservation holders suggest Rivian is not strictly following a first-come, first-served system when sending configuration invitations. Some customers who reserved an R2 early are still waiting for access, while others who placed reservations later have already been invited to build and order their vehicles.
The situation has sparked debate across online forums and social media groups dedicated to Rivian ownership. Many customers assumed that placing an early reservation would secure their position in line, only to discover that several other factors appear to influence when an invitation arrives.
Despite the complaints, Rivian’s approach appears intentional. The company previously indicated that reservation timing would be only one part of a broader strategy designed to support a smoother and more efficient vehicle rollout.
Configuration Invitations Begin Accelerating
Kind of crazy to see folks who placed an R2 reservation weeks ago get invited whilst others who put it reservations in years ago, silence. The logic is… weird. https://t.co/fKjOKObC2b

After a relatively slow start, Rivian has increased the pace of R2 configuration invitations. Reservation holders have reported a noticeable rise in email invitations during the weeks following the SUV’s official launch.
The growing number of invitations has generated excitement among buyers eager to finalize their orders. Online communities have been flooded with discussions about colors, trim levels, and delivery estimates as customers begin making decisions about their vehicles.
However, not every configuration is currently available. Some options remain unavailable during the initial launch phase, meaning customers seeking specific combinations may need to wait longer before completing their orders.
Rivian has reportedly allowed customers to register interest in future configurations while also offering the option to switch to currently available specifications if they want to accelerate delivery timelines.
Reservation Date Isn’t The Only Factor
The biggest source of controversy is the realization that reservation dates are not the sole determinant of priority. Rivian has acknowledged that several variables influence when customers receive configuration invitations.
One major factor is location. Customers who live near Rivian Service Centers or Demo Centers appear more likely to receive invitations earlier than those located farther away. The strategy allows the company to streamline deliveries and respond more quickly if early production vehicles require attention.
Existing Rivian customers may also receive priority treatment. Current R1 owners and customers approaching the end of their lease terms have been identified as groups that could move higher in the queue.
The company has also stated that a randomly selected group of reservation holders may receive early invitations. While that approach is intended to create broader access, it has inevitably frustrated some customers who expected reservation timing alone to determine their place in line.
Rivian Is Trying To Avoid Launch Problems

From Rivian’s perspective, the rollout strategy serves a practical purpose. The company has significant pressure to ensure the R2 launch proceeds smoothly, especially given how important the model is to its long-term future.
Before customer deliveries began, Rivian employees took delivery of early production R2s. This allowed the company to identify potential issues in real-world conditions before vehicles reached retail customers.
Expanding deliveries gradually gives Rivian an opportunity to monitor quality, logistics, and service operations while maintaining greater control over the launch process. Delivering vehicles near existing service infrastructure also reduces risk if problems emerge.
While that strategy may disappoint some reservation holders, it reflects lessons learned across the industry. Several automakers have faced criticism in recent years after rushed vehicle launches led to production delays, software issues, and quality concerns.
The Importance Of The R2
The stakes surrounding the R2 are difficult to overstate. Unlike the larger and more expensive R1T and R1S, the R2 is designed to move Rivian into a significantly larger segment of the market.
The compact electric SUV is expected to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y, one of the best-selling EVs in North America. Success in that segment could dramatically increase Rivian’s sales volume and strengthen its position against larger rivals.
Current pricing starts at $57,990 for the Performance model, with additional variants scheduled to arrive later. Rivian plans to introduce the Premium trim before the end of the year, while the entry-level Standard model is expected to follow in 2027.
For customers still waiting on a configuration invitation, the message appears straightforward: a reservation secures a place in the process, but not necessarily a specific position in line. As Rivian continues expanding invitations, buyers may need a bit more patience before their turn arrives.
