A video showing residents confronting and beating an alleged jewelry store thief has gone viral on social media. However, one man wearing a green T-shirt drew widespread attention after stepping in to shield the suspect and even appearing to push and strike residents who were trying to restrain him.
The suspect likely arrived at the jewelry store on a motorcycle with an accomplice, who waited nearby as the alleged thief was surrounded by members of the public.
The suspect was wearing a helmet along with what appeared to be a balaclava underneath to conceal his identity. During the confrontation, residents removed both items, exposing his face.
The video has sparked heated debate online, with many calling out the man in the green T-shirt for intervening and trying to stop people from restraining the suspect.
Brave Members of the Public Unite Against Thief
The Instagram video begins with the alleged thief sprinting through the streets of Málaga, Spain, still wearing his helmet as residents chase him on foot in an attempt to stop him from escaping.
Each time members of the public managed to bring him to the ground, he quickly got back up and continued running without fighting back. His sole focus appeared to be getting away before the crowd could fully overpower him or police arrived.
At one point, the suspect broke free and reached his accomplice, who was waiting on a motorcycle. He climbed onto the back of the bike, but just as the pair tried to speed away, a person riding an electric scooter crashed into the motorcycle, knocking the alleged thief off the pillion seat.
The fall allowed residents to catch up and restrain him once again. As several people attempted to hold him down, a man wearing a green T-shirt stepped in, kicking one person twice and pushing others away in what appeared to be an effort to stop them from restraining the suspect.
Despite the man’s intervention, the crowd continued pursuing the alleged thief. He eventually managed to break free again, but several residents kept chasing him on foot, while others tried different tactics to block his escape into an adjacent street. However, he escaped, while one resident continued chasing him.
It is not known whether the thief was eventually caught by the public and handed over to the police, or if he managed to escape. The bike-borne accomplice escaped from the scene. The incident serves as a reminder that alleged thieves risk being confronted by members of the public before police arrive.
