Police in the UK are hunting for two people who fled the scene after a late-night crash in County Durham. The crash occurred late at night on Saturday, 4th July, after a collision took place involving two cars, with one of them speeding away.
British news publication The Northern Echo reported on the story, with the accident taking place on the A177 road near Sedgfield at around 11:30 pm. The report states that the driver of the first car, a Toyota Corolla, was taken to hospital for treatment.
However, it is the second vehicle, an Audi A4, that the police are interested in. It is this car that fled the scene rapidly after the accident, presumably due to its involvement in the crash. Following the crash, the Audi sped away from the scene, sparking a police hunt that included a helicopter.
National Police Air Service (NPAS) Newcastle was quickly deployed to the area to attempt to search for the vehicle and allow road forces to intercept it. At the time of writing, the Audi had not been found, frustrating officers who confirmed that an investigation into the accident is ongoing.
This Is What Happened on the A177

The Northern Echo reported that the accident took place on July 4th, Independence Day, at roughly 11:30 pm. The two cars crashed on the A177, and it was the driver of the Toyota Corolla who came off worse from the accident. The driver of the car was hospitalized, and at the time of writing, is still in the hospital.
The second car involved was an Audi A4. Rather than stay at the scene and deal with the consequences, the two occupants of the Audi got back in and sped off to get away from law enforcement. National Police Air Service (NPAS) Newcastle was called in to try and find the car. However, after 19 minutes of searching, the Audi wasn’t located, and the helicopter returned to its base.
Police closed the road off while the accident was dealt with. They later confirmed that an investigation was ongoing following the crash. A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary discussed the incident, saying, “Police were called at about 11.30 pm on Saturday, July 4, following a collision involving two cars on the A177 near Sedgefield.” “The driver of a Toyota Corolla was taken to hospital for treatment,” added the police force.
The Police Are Appealing for Information

The statement continued, stating, “The driver and passenger of an Audi A4 are believed to have fled the scene of the incident. The road was closed while the vehicles were recovered.” The spokesperson confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and also appealed for anyone with information to come forward with what they know.
“Anyone with any information is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101 quoting incident reference 601 of July 4,” said the spokesperson. An NPAS spokesperson said: “At 2350hrs on Saturday. July 4, 2026, a police helicopter crew from NPAS Newcastle was deployed to Ferryhill to assist Durham Constabulary in a search following a road traffic incident. Total flying time on the task was 19 minutes.” “The Durham Constabulary log number is 601 of 04/06/2026.”
