A man walked into an Oregon car dealership offering to sell a 2025 Mazda for $15,000. The dealer estimated the vehicle was worth about $35,000, making the asking price less than half its estimated value.
The unusually cheap offer caught the dealer’s attention, but before agreeing to anything, he checked the vehicle’s identification number. He discovered that the Mazda was connected to another dealership in Oregon.
On October 21, 2026, Eugene police responded to the business in the 400 block of Highway 99. The man who brought in the vehicle left on foot as officers arrived, but they located and detained him.
Police identified the seller as 31-year-old Lakhwinder Singh Gangar of Medford. Their investigation uncovered suspected methamphetamine and pieces of a disassembled key fob, leading to his arrest on two charges.
A Suspicious Price
According to the Eugene Police Department, Gangar approached the Highway 99 dealership Wednesday afternoon with the Mazda. He wanted $15,000 for a vehicle the dealer believed was worth approximately $35,000.
That left a $20,000 difference between the asking price and the dealer’s estimate. Finding such a low offer abnormal, the dealer ran the Mazda’s vehicle identification number, or VIN, to check its ownership.
The search showed that the car belonged to a dealership in Salem, Oregon. Rather than relying solely on that result, the Eugene dealer contacted the Salem business directly.
Employees there confirmed that the Mazda had been stolen. With the vehicle’s status established, the Eugene dealer called police to report the attempted sale.
Walking Away
Officers were dispatched at 2:26 p.m. to the dealership in the 400 block of Highway 99. Gangar left the business on foot as police arrived, according to the department. Officers located him and detained him while investigating the stolen vehicle.
During their contact with Gangar, police discovered a baggie containing a white crystalline substance and a pipe in his shirt pocket. Officers tested the substance in the field, receiving a presumptive positive result for methamphetamine.
Another discovery involved the Mazda’s key fob. Gangar had a disassembled fob in his possession, while additional pieces were found inside the vehicle.
Two Arrest Charges
Following the investigation, police arrested Gangar for possession of a stolen vehicle and unlawful possession of methamphetamine. Officers transported the 31-year-old Medford man to the Lane County Jail.
The two arrest charges stemmed from separate discoveries during the investigation. The stolen-vehicle charge concerned the Mazda that Gangar had attempted to sell, while the drug charge followed the discovery of the suspected methamphetamine in his shirt pocket.
Eugene police did not identify Gangar as the person who originally stole the Mazda from the Salem dealership. The department’s October 21 announcement listed the two possession offenses as the reasons for his arrest.
