More Than 100,000 Mitsubishi SUVs Recalled Over Faulty Liftgates

Mitsubishi Motors has issued a major recall affecting more than 100,000 SUVs in the United States.

The problem involves faulty liftgate gas springs that could suddenly fail without warning.

If that happens, the rear hatch could unexpectedly slam shut.

That creates an obvious injury risk, especially for families loading groceries, luggage, or helping kids in and out of the cargo area.

What’s Causing The Problem?

According to recall documents, it’s related to road salt, as salt water can seep into the dust cap of the liftgate springs.

Over time, that trapped moisture can cause corrosion inside the gas spring cylinders.

That corrosion weakens the cylinder walls and may cause the springs to rapidly lose pressure.

When that happens, the liftgate may no longer stay open properly.

Why Mitsubishi Expanded The Recall

Mitsubishi first issued a recall for this issue in August 2025.

That original recall covered 91,697 vehicles sold or registered in “salt belt” states where road salt is heavily used during winter.

However, regulators later informed Mitsubishi about a reported spring failure outside those regions, which forced the automaker to widen the recall nationwide.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The expanded recall now impacts roughly 108,000 vehicles.

Affected models include:

  • Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Mitsubishi Has Already Received Claims

The automaker says it has received four warranty claims related to liftgate spring ruptures.

Those incidents reportedly happened between November 2025 and February 2026.

No serious injuries have been reported so far.

What Owners Should Do

Mitsubishi dealers will replace both liftgate gas springs free of charge.

The updated parts are designed with better corrosion resistance.

Owners should watch for official recall notices or contact their local dealer if they think their SUV may be affected.

A faulty liftgate may not sound dramatic, but nobody wants a heavy SUV hatch crashing down unexpectedly.
