A few years ago, the idea of getting 865 horsepower in a rugged SUV for around $50,000 would have sounded impossible. Today, it’s coming from China.
While many Western automakers continue pushing prices higher, Chinese brands are taking a different route: more power, more equipment, and more shock value for the money.
The latest example is the new Tank 500 Black Warrior Edition, a limited-run performance off-roader from Great Wall Motor that blends luxury SUV presence with supercar-level output.
And with production capped at just 500 units, this budget SUV makes a statement!
Tank 500 Black Warrior Brings Massive Power

Great Wall Motor’s Tank brand has officially launched the Tank 500 Black Warrior Edition in China, based on the already popular Tank 500 large SUV.
The headline figure is its claimed combined output of 865 horsepower, generated by a plug-in hybrid powertrain pairing a turbocharged gasoline engine with electric motors.
That puts it in power territory occupied by exotic SUVs costing several times more.
A $50,000 Starting Price
Despite the massive power output, reports indicate pricing starts at around $50,600 USD.
That number is what makes this vehicle so disruptive. In many markets, $50,000 barely gets buyers into a modestly equipped midsize SUV, let alone a limited-edition performance model with nearly 900 horsepower.
Even if export costs or taxes would raise the price elsewhere, the domestic Chinese pricing alone sends a message to automakers around the world.
Built To Look The Part

The Black Warrior Edition also receives unique styling touches to separate it from the standard Tank 500.
Reports mention a full black exterior package that includes blacked-out headlamps, grille, wheels, side steps, roof rails, and trim pieces, combined with red brake calipers. This is an aggressive presentation aimed at buyers who want their SUV to look as serious as its power figures suggest.
The standard Tank 500 already carries boxy bodywork and upscale interior appointments, so the special edition builds on a strong base.
China Is Changing The Automotive Scenery

Traditionally, Chinese automakers were only competing on affordability, but that’s no longer the case. They’re increasingly competing on engineering, design, and outrageous specifications.
Vehicles like this challenge long-held assumptions that performance SUVs must come from Germany, Italy, America, or Britain.
An 865-hp off-roader for the price of an average family crossover would have been unthinkable not long ago.
The Bigger Picture
It’s unknown whether the Tank 500 Black Warrior will ever reach global markets, as brand recognition, dealer support, and regulations still matter.
That said, even if it never officially lands in the United States or Europe, it proves that the basement bargain performance game has changed. And legacy automakers should be paying attention.
