Leapmotor B05 Gives Volkswagen And Renault A New Electric Hatchback Rival

Chinese automaker Leapmotor is continuing its rapid European expansion, and one of its most important new models is heading to the United Kingdom. The new Leapmotor B05 is a battery-electric hatchback aimed at buyers who want modern technology without premium-brand pricing.

The model is expected to reach U.K. showrooms in July with a starting price of about $39,000. In some European markets, the B05 starts closer to a $31,000 equivalent, depending on local incentives and equipment.

That places it directly against established electric hatchbacks such as the Cupra Born, Renault Megane E-Tech, and Volkswagen ID. 3. Leapmotor’s argument is simple: offer strong equipment, competitive range, and rear-wheel drive at a sharper price.

That strategy has helped several Chinese brands gain attention in Europe. The B05 shows how quickly Leapmotor wants to move from budget curiosity to serious mainstream alternative.

The B05 Has A Different Name In China

In China, the same model is known as the Lafa 5. Leapmotor founder and CEO Zhu Jiangming wanted a name that stood apart from the rest of the company’s range because the car has a sportier personality than many of the brand’s other models.

For international markets, Leapmotor uses the B05 name. That makes the hatchback easier to position beside the B10 crossover, which is already part of the brand’s European push.

The car measures just under 177 inches long, with a wheelbase of about 106 inches. Those dimensions place it squarely in Europe’s compact family hatchback class.

Its proportions are familiar rather than extreme. Instead of relying on futuristic shapes, Leapmotor chose a cleaner and more conservative design that could appeal to buyers who usually look at European hatchbacks.

Rear-Wheel Drive Gives It A More Interesting Setup

The B05 uses one electric motor mounted on the rear axle. It produces 215 HP and sends power to the rear wheels, giving the car a layout that still feels unusual in this price class.

Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph takes 6.7 seconds with the larger battery version. That makes it quick enough to feel lively in daily driving, even though Leapmotor is not presenting it as a full performance model.

The rear-drive layout also helps separate the B05 from many front-drive electric hatchbacks. It gives the car a more balanced technical story and could make it more appealing to drivers who want something a little more engaging.

Leapmotor and Stellantis engineers also worked on chassis tuning for European roads. Early driving impressions point to accurate steering, controlled body movement, and a ride that remains comfortable on rougher surfaces.

The Bigger Battery Offers Up To 300 Miles Of Range

The B05 is available with two battery choices in Europe. The smaller 56.2 kWh pack offers up to 249 miles of WLTP range, while the larger 67.1 kWh battery increases that figure to about 300 miles.

Fast charging is another important part of the package. The larger battery supports DC charging at up to 174 kW, allowing a 30 to 80% charge in around 17 minutes under ideal conditions.

That makes longer trips easier to manage and gives the B05 a useful advantage against some rivals. Range and charging speed remain two of the biggest questions for buyers moving into their first EV.

Leapmotor also uses Cell-to-Chassis battery construction. Instead of placing the battery in a separate module, the pack becomes part of the vehicle structure, improving stiffness, packaging efficiency, and weight distribution.

The Cabin Focuses On Screens And Space

Inside, the B05 follows the modern EV formula. A 14.6-inch central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, while the driver gets an 8.8-inch digital instrument display.

Most vehicle functions are controlled through the central screen. That includes drive modes, regenerative braking settings, and steering response adjustments.

A large panoramic roof helps the cabin feel open, while the materials appear designed for daily use rather than delicate luxury. Front seats are electrically adjustable, and rear-seat space is one of the car’s stronger points.

The trunk measures 12.2 cubic feet, which is practical enough for most family use, although it does not set a new class record. Frameless doors add a more premium touch that is still rare in this price range.

U.K. Buyers Get A Simple Equipment Strategy

Leapmotor is keeping the U.K. lineup straightforward. Instead of a long list of trims and expensive option packs, the B05 is expected to arrive with one generously equipped specification.

Standard equipment includes a panoramic roof, 19-inch alloy wheels, electrically adjustable seats, and the full multimedia setup. Buyers are expected to have only limited interior color choices, including light gray and dark gray.

That approach makes the car easier to understand. It also supports Leapmotor’s value message by avoiding the feeling that the attractive starting price only applies to a stripped-down model.

For many buyers, that could be one of the B05’s strongest advantages. European EV shoppers are becoming more careful about price, equipment, and real-world usability.

Leapmotor Wants To Challenge The Mainstream

Leapmotor still does not have the brand recognition of Volkswagen, Renault, Cupra, or Hyundai in Europe. The B05 is designed to change that by entering one of the region’s most visible and competitive EV categories.

Its combination of rear-wheel drive, competitive range, fast charging, generous equipment, and aggressive pricing makes it look like a serious alternative on paper. The real test will be dealer support, software quality, resale value, and how the car feels after daily use.

The B05 also benefits from Leapmotor’s partnership with Stellantis, which helps the Chinese brand expand distribution and support outside China. That gives it a stronger European foundation than many new entrants have had.

If Leapmotor can maintain its pricing and deliver a polished ownership experience, the B05 could become one of the more interesting new electric hatchbacks in Europe. It shows that Chinese automakers are no longer only competing on price but also on range, equipment, and packaging.
