The Tesla Cybertruck hasn’t been controversial at all, has it? Well, it’s safe to say it’s not been an easy ride for the electric pickup truck. The strange styling and other issues have meant it hasn’t been the success Elon Musk would have hoped for.
Still, it hasn’t stopped people from pushing the car to the absolute limit either. YouTuber WhistlinDiesel, someone who loves to take things to the absolute limit, decided to see what the Cybertruck was made of. And in quite the literal sense, as it involved a heavy impact.
The YouTuber decided to crash-test the two cars as he was incredibly curious about which one would come off worse. It is a far cry from him setting things on fire or dropping them out of the sky. But a crash test always makes for dramatic viewing, and this one was no exception.
In some ways, it was the perfect matchup. Musk has often taken a pot shot or two at Ford, all while trying to portray the Cybertruck as the greatest vehicle on Earth. So it almost feels like this sort of test was inevitable. But which came off worse?
How Did the Two Pickup Trucks Compare?
The trucks went through some pretty extreme tests with the YouTuber, as well as the crash test itself. The two vehicles were off-roaded in Utah, and while both took a battering, the Cybertruck came off worse. It lost its rear towing module, leaving a very odd-looking rear end on the truck.
Incredibly, the Ford F-150 did seem to survive a bit better. It went on some very intensive trail runs, with a flat tire, we might add, and it took quite a battering. You only have to look at the state of it and the Tesla to see the ordeal that both trucks were put through. Both these trucks were already past their best before the YouTuber got his hands on them.
In fact, WhistlinDiesel had to pay over $50,000 to repair the truck, and Tesla had already said it was a ‘total loss.’ Given that the truck was about to be smashing into its Blue Oval rival, what condition it was in didn’t really matter to the YouTuber. He also decided to drop 3,000lbs concrete bollards into them, with the concrete mostly being absorbed by the battery. The F-150, on the other hand, was hardly troubled by it.
Which Truck Survived the Crash Test Best?
The crash test, however, was the real reason people watched the video. WhistlinDiesel launched the EV at the Ford at a speed of 111mph. So you knew there was going to be some major damage to both vehicles. The truck was aimed directly at the Ford, and upon hitting it, the F-150 basically disintegrated on the spot, and the trucks disappeared into a ball of flame.
When they finally emerged, we were left with quite the shocking sight. The F-150 was just gone; basically nothing remained of it. The Cybertruck, however, had fared a little better in the accident. It too had burst into flames thanks to the batteries, and clearly it wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. This isn’t the most representative crash test due to the battered nature of the trucks and the type of accident. But it’s a good indicator of how they can cope with a massive impact.
