The I-75 North in Chattanooga was closed for several hours on Saturday evening after a truck carrying fireworks crashed and caught fire. Within minutes, the fireworks did what they inevitably will when exposed to fire, and the onlookers were treated to an impromptu evening display.
Bystanders quickly evacuated the area, but not quite so far away that they couldn’t still pull out their phones and shoot a few videos that quickly appeared online. Thankfully, according to the Chattanooga Fire Department, there were no reported injuries.
Footage taken from a bystander on an overpass only a few 100 meters away showed the roaring fire on one side of the highway, while the other is at standstill traffic. As the inferno burns, fireworks fly all around, popping and cracking, visible even in the daylight hours.
Local fire departments rushed to the scene and attempted to quench the flames, doing their best to dodge explosions flying across the Chattanooga Interstate. Both the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department and Chattanooga Fire Department responded to the emergency and brought it under control without any reported injuries.
Dangerous Cargo
🚨 I-75 in Chattanooga just turned into an unscheduled fireworks show! 🔥
A truck full of fireworks caught fire on the freeway near Ooltewah and started launching them everywhere like nature decided to celebrate early. No injuries reported, but traffic was wild.

Footage shows the cops and firefighters taking cover behind their trucks as they wait for the burning firework cargo to calm down. Rather than risk getting hit by a stray explosive, they sat tight until it was the pinwheel part of the show to pop their heads out and started dumping fire on the blaze.
Speaking to WDEF, a local said: “It sounded like typical fireworks going off in the area, but then I walked outside and saw silver plumes coming from Ooltewah Georgetown Road. That’s where I thought it was. The truck had been almost fully engulfed in flames for about five minutes before we started seeing fire hoses being lined up.”
Even after the burning truck full of fireworks was extinguished, it was a few more hours before traffic started flowing normally. Those at the back will have been wondering what the hold-up was, while those at the front got quite a show, and probably some singed eyebrows.
Not The First Time
Transporting lorry loads of decorative explosives is, obviously, not the safest thing to do in the world, and throughout history, there have been some catastrophic incidents when things go awry. In this case, the Chattanooga fireworks display caused no damage to human life, with the only casualty being the wallets of whoever owned the truck.
In 2023, the Trans Canadian Highway saw a stunning display of fireworks when a Semi crashed into a Pickup. For an hour, the night sky was lit up with explosions as hundreds of fireworks were ignited by the flames. Drivers pulled over in their cars to watch the show, confused but entertained by the driver’s misfortune. Thankfully, only one person suffered minor injuries.
