A Texas woman has sparked a heated online discussion after claiming a Land Rover dealership quoted her $7,500 for a part before offering to do the job for her father for just $2,500. The story, shared on TikTok, has fueled fresh debate over pricing transparency and whether women are sometimes treated differently at service departments.

Ashlee, who posts under the username @findingashlee, says she isn’t unfamiliar with the automotive industry. She explains that her father owned car dealerships for more than five decades and that she grew up working around vehicles, even rebuilding the engine in her first car, a 1973 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, when she was 12 years old.

According to Ashlee, the incident occurred about two years ago after she took her 2013 Range Rover to a Land Rover dealership in Austin, Texas, to investigate what she described as a minor oil leak. The repair estimate she received immediately raised concerns because of its unusually high cost.

Wanting a second opinion, she contacted her father and asked him to call the dealership separately. What happened next is the part of the story that has attracted widespread attention online.

A Dramatically Different Quote

Ashlee says her father contacted the dealership and spoke with a different service advisor, asking about the cost of replacing the same component. According to her, he was quoted approximately $2,500 for the repair instead of the $7,500 estimate she had received.

She claims the dealership honored the lower price after she confronted staff with the discrepancy. If accurate, that would represent a difference of roughly $5,000 for the same repair.

Ashlee also alleges that when she later raised the issue with the dealership’s general manager, she received a dismissive response. According to her account, he suggested she should call her father to explain how cars work, a remark she says prompted her to file a complaint with Jaguar Land Rover North America.

The dealership has not publicly responded to the allegations, and the claims have not been independently verified.

A Second Complaint Followed

Ashlee says the manufacturer responded to her initial complaint by providing a $1,000 dealership credit. She later used that credit toward a new set of tires purchased through the same dealership.

More recently, she claims her Range Rover developed a vibration while one tire repeatedly lost air. After taking the SUV to Discount Tire for inspection, she says technicians identified two tires they considered unsafe—one with a bulge and another with significant tread separation that reportedly exposed internal steel belts.

Ashlee believes the dealership sold her aged or defective tires. She says she has since filed another complaint after alleging the dealership failed to respond to her attempts to discuss the issue.

Those claims also remain unverified, and no findings from an official investigation have been released.

Studies Have Examined Repair Price Differences

Ashlee’s experience has resonated with many viewers because previous research has explored whether gender can influence automotive repair estimates.

One frequently cited academic study found that women who appeared unfamiliar with typical repair costs were sometimes quoted higher prices than men or women who demonstrated knowledge of market pricing. Once customers indicated they understood what a repair should cost, quoted prices generally became much more consistent.

That research does not prove that every pricing difference is the result of discrimination. Repair estimates can legitimately vary depending on diagnosis, labor times, replacement parts, and the service advisor preparing the quote.

Nevertheless, perceived inconsistencies can quickly undermine customer confidence, particularly when two people appear to receive substantially different estimates for what they believe is the same repair.

Transparency Builds Trust

The story has generated thousands of comments, with many women sharing similar experiences involving vehicle repairs and dealership service departments. Others argued that obtaining multiple estimates is always worthwhile, regardless of who is requesting the work.

Consumers are generally encouraged to ask for detailed written estimates that separate labor, replacement parts, taxes, and additional fees. Comparing quotes from multiple repair facilities can also help determine whether a recommendation and its associated cost are reasonable.

At this stage, Ashlee’s account reflects allegations made on social media rather than verified findings. Even so, the attention surrounding her experience highlights the importance of transparent pricing, clear communication, and treating every customer consistently—qualities that remain essential for building long-term trust between dealerships and vehicle owners.
