A routine welfare check turned into a full-blown shootout this week after a Florida sheriff’s office says a suspect ambushed deputies the moment they arrived to arrest him. Two deputies were shot and wounded, and the suspect was later pronounced dead at the hospital after a third deputy returned fire.
The chain of events started the night before, reported Fox 13 Tampa Bay, when a woman told investigators her ex-boyfriend showed up at her house, zip tied her legs, and held her against her will overnight. She said he threatened to kill her multiple times while she drifted in and out of consciousness. In the morning, she found herself unrestrained and managed to talk her way out of the house by telling him she had an appointment she couldn’t miss. He let her leave.
She drove straight to the sheriff’s district office to request a protective order. Once deputies heard the full story, they realized this was far more serious than paperwork. They started working to identify the suspect, track down his address, and figure out what he was driving.
Deputies eventually located him at a residence in Ruskin and launched a drone to keep eyes on him without putting anyone in the open. When the suspect walked toward a parking lot occupied by workers, deputies moved in to take him into custody. That’s when things went sideways fast.
The Ambush Unfolds
According to the sheriff, the suspect opened the side door of his van and punched a hole through it to get a clear shot as the first deputy arrived. He opened fire before the deputy could even get his car door shut, striking him in the face. As a second deputy pulled up, the suspect turned his gun on him too, hitting him in the neck through the patrol car. Neither deputy had a chance to return fire in those first moments.
A third deputy, a 27-year veteran of the department, took a tactical position from the rear and returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.
Deputies Airlifted, Suspect Pronounced Dead
Both wounded deputies were flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where the sheriff said they were expected to recover.
The suspect, a 34 year old with a prior felony conviction from 2023 for tampering with physical evidence, was also transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
What Comes Next
The sheriff said body camera and drone footage would be released publicly, though deceased imagery would be blurred. He noted there was no exchange of words before the suspect opened fire, calling the entire encounter a textbook example of why deputies train so extensively for these scenarios. He also praised the woman who came forward that morning, saying her decision likely prevented further harm.
Investigators say they found no prior documented history of domestic violence involving the suspect before this incident.
