A man accused of posing as a police officer in Maryland is facing charges after investigators say he attempted to pull over an undercover detective using emergency lights mounted on his private vehicle. The encounter unfolded just after midnight in Downtown Silver Spring and has now prompted authorities to search for other possible victims.

According to Montgomery County Police, the suspect allegedly initiated a traffic stop while driving a privately owned Ford Taurus. The driver he targeted turned out to be an undercover officer assigned to a proactive enforcement detail in the area.

Police say the incident raised concerns that the suspect may have conducted similar stops involving members of the public before his arrest. Investigators are now urging anyone who may have encountered him to come forward.

The case has attracted attention through local reporting, including coverage by FOX 5 DC, whose YouTube report outlined the allegations and the subsequent investigation. Authorities stress that the inquiry remains active as they work to determine whether additional incidents took place.

The incident occurred during the early hours of Monday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 12:15 a.m. in Downtown Silver Spring in Montgomery County, Maryland. Investigators said Melvin Andrew Pinkney Jr., 42, of California, Maryland in St. Mary’s County, was behind the wheel of a privately owned Ford Taurus when he approached an unmarked Montgomery County Police cruiser from behind.

According to police statements, Pinkney activated red and blue emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle ahead of him. The maneuver suggested that he intended for the driver to believe he was a law enforcement officer conducting official business.

The person inside the unmarked vehicle, however, was not an unsuspecting motorist. Police said the driver was an undercover detective assigned to the 2nd District Special Assignment Team. The detective was participating in a proactive enforcement detail in the Silver Spring area when Pinkney allegedly attempted to stop him.

The Undercover Detective Confronts the Suspect

After observing the emergency lights, the undercover detective activated the police equipment installed in the unmarked cruiser. Investigators said Pinkney then turned around and returned to his Ford Taurus. The detective confronted him and sought to determine whether he had any authority to conduct traffic stops.

According to Montgomery County Police, Pinkney failed to provide law enforcement credentials during the encounter. Officers also determined that the Ford Taurus was not an authorized police vehicle.

He was arrested at the scene without incident. Authorities subsequently charged Pinkney with impersonating a peace officer or public servant.

Following his arrest, he was initially held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. Some local reports also referenced alcohol intoxication in connection with the incident, although officials have not publicly outlined how that factor may relate to the charges filed.

Investigators Search for Other Possible Victims

Police believe the June 15 encounter may not have been an isolated incident. Investigators suspect Pinkney may have used emergency lights to stop other drivers while posing as a member of law enforcement.

As a result, Montgomery County Police are seeking information from anyone who may have experienced a similar encounter. Authorities are asking potential victims or witnesses to contact investigators through the Montgomery County Police tip line at 1-866-411-8477.

At this stage, police have not announced reports involving robbery, assault, weapons offenses, or other crimes linked to the alleged traffic stops. Officials have also not disclosed a motive behind the alleged impersonation.

Court Status and the Ongoing Investigation

Court information cited in local and social media reporting indicates that Pinkney was later released on a $5,000 unsecured personal bond. No additional charges have been announced in the days following the arrest.

Likewise, authorities have not identified any additional victims through public statements issued since the initial reports. The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine whether others encountered Pinkney under similar circumstances.

The account presented by FOX 5 DC in its YouTube coverage aligns with statements released by Montgomery County Police, as well as reporting from local outlets including WJLA. For now, investigators continue to piece together the full scope of the allegations against Pinkney while encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
