A family says a horn honk at a driver stopped at a green light led to an ugly road rage confrontation in Southern California, where dashcam video captured a man getting out of his vehicle and smashing their windshield.

The family, who asked not to be identified because they fear for their safety, told NBC Los Angeles the encounter happened Sunday on Highway 18 near Stoddard Wells Road in Apple Valley.

The dashcam video shows a man exiting a vehicle stopped ahead of the family, walking toward them, and striking the driver’s side of their windshield with a hard object.

The blow leaves a large damaged area in the glass. The family said the man also tried to open one of their doors, but they had locked the vehicle.

When the traffic light changed to green, the family drove away.

NBC Los Angeles reported that a detailed description of the man was not immediately available. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Apple Valley Station is investigating the confrontation.

Family Says Confrontation Started With a Honk at a Green Light

According to the family’s account, the encounter began before the windshield was damaged.

They said the other driver had stopped at a green light on Highway 18. The family honked their horn, and they said the driver then began driving erratically.

The dashcam footage later captured the confrontation at the intersection, including the man approaching their vehicle.

The family told NBC Los Angeles they feared for their safety during the encounter and asked the station not to identify them.

Law enforcement officials told NBC that drivers targeted in a road rage incident should avoid interacting with the other driver and instead head toward a police or fire station.

No arrest had been announced as of NBC Los Angeles’ latest report, and the Sheriff’s Department had not publicly identified a suspect.
