American Trucks Are Getting So Heavy That Brembo Had To Make A Bigger Brake Caliper

Brembo has built braking hardware for some of the fastest road cars on the planet, so you’d expect its most powerful passenger-vehicle caliper to end up behind the wheel of an exotic supercar. But, no, that’s not the case at all. Instead, you’ll find it stopping a Chevrolet pickup.

That pickup happens to be the Silverado EV, a machine capable of weighing roughly four tons before you start worrying about whatever is attached to its hitch. Combine that mass with enormous power and serious towing capability, and ordinary braking hardware has a formidable job on its hands.

Brembo’s answer is called the Boldika, a huge six-piston fixed caliper developed specifically for large, heavy, high-output vehicles. It can produce more than 8,500 Nm (6,269 lb-ft) of braking torque, making it the most powerful passenger-vehicle caliper Brembo has produced.

The first application is the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST Stars and Steel Edition. It won’t be the last, as Brembo expects the design to eventually find its way onto other large electric and combustion-powered trucks and SUVs.

Modern Trucks Present A Serious Braking Problem

American pickups have been getting bigger and heavier for years, while electrification has pushed some models into another weight category entirely. Large battery packs can add substantial mass, yet customers still expect their electric trucks to accelerate hard, carry payloads, and tow heavy trailers.

The Silverado EV demonstrates the challenge nicely. The RST can produce up to 760 horsepower, while Chevrolet offers Extended Range and Max Range configurations capable of traveling up to 410 and 478 miles, respectively.

Brembo engineered the Boldika with worst-case situations in mind, including a heavily loaded truck towing a trailer that could weigh as much as 14,000 pounds. If that trailer’s own brakes stop contributing, the truck’s braking system suddenly has an unpleasant amount of work to do.

Simply scaling up a conventional caliper isn’t necessarily the ideal answer. Greater braking forces can cause components to flex, potentially compromising the firm and predictable pedal response manufacturers want.

Brembo Used Three Pieces And Two Metals

The Boldika uses an unusual three-piece construction. Three pistons sit inside each of two aluminum caliper halves, while a central cast-iron bridge joins them together and provides the structural strength needed to resist flex.

That bridge attaches using four mounting bolts rather than the more conventional two. Brembo says the arrangement delivers the rigidity necessary for heavy vehicles without relying on an even bulkier conventional design.

Mixing aluminum and cast iron naturally raises concerns about corrosion between dissimilar metals. Brembo addresses that with protective coatings, including a zinc-nickel treatment on the central bracket, before the complete assembly receives its painted finish.

On the Silverado EV Stars and Steel Edition, the enormous calipers are finished in Torch Red with Chevrolet and Brembo branding. They’re paired with 15.7-inch rotors, while the design can fit inside wheels as small as 20 inches despite the substantial hardware involved.

Bigger Brakes Don’t Have To Mean More Drag

Brembo has also incorporated its Enesys zero-drag technology. Small springs help pull the brake pads away from the rotor after the driver releases the pedal, reducing the residual friction that can otherwise remain between the two surfaces.

That’s particularly useful on an EV, where eliminating even small sources of mechanical drag can help efficiency and driving range. Reduced contact when the brakes aren’t being used should also help extend pad life.

Maintenance has received some thought as well. Once the caliper is removed and the Enesys springs are released, the large pads can be removed through the center of the assembly without completely dismantling the caliper.

Each Boldika weighs around 31 pounds, so nobody will mistake it for lightweight sports-car hardware. Brembo’s priority here is providing enormous stopping capability and consistent pedal feel for vehicles operating under much greater loads.

The Silverado EV Is Only The Beginning

Brembo says the Boldika architecture is scalable, opening the door for versions tailored to other trucks and SUVs. Future applications aren’t limited to EVs either, with large combustion-powered vehicles facing many of the same weight, performance, and towing demands.

The caliper has also been designed with future brake-by-wire systems in mind and can work with Brembo’s Sensify electrohydraulic braking technology. That gives the company room to adapt the basic concept as braking systems become increasingly software-controlled.

For decades, extreme braking hardware was primarily associated with sports cars chasing lap times. Now a four-ton electric pickup with hundreds of horsepower and potentially thousands of pounds hanging from its hitch can demand equally serious engineering.

Brembo’s biggest passenger-vehicle brake ending up on a Silverado rather than a Ferrari says plenty about where the American truck market has gone.
