BYD Flash Charging Sees EV Go From 10% To 97% In Under 10 Minutes

Electric cars have become quicker, smarter, and longer-range, but charging time has remained the biggest sticking point for many drivers. No matter how good the vehicle is, people still compare recharging to the speed of filling a gas tank.

BYD now wants to erase that gap entirely.

A live demonstration in Europe has shown the Chinese automaker’s new Flash Charging system taking an EV from 10 percent to 97 percent battery in just 9 minutes and 22 seconds.

If this technology scales properly, the entire EV charging conversation could change overnight.

Real-World Demo Shows Wild Charging Speeds

The test was captured by YouTube channel Out of Spec Roaming using a Denza Z9 GT, one of BYD’s premium models.

According to the video, the car jumped from 10% to 20% in just 48 seconds, then reached 40% after only 2 minutes and 23 seconds.

Even more impressively, it hit 70% in 5 minutes and 20 seconds, before finishing at 97% in 9 minutes and 22 seconds.

Those numbers are far beyond what most public fast chargers currently deliver.

The Charger Is A Monster

BYD says the system is rated for up to 1.5 megawatts (1,500 kW) in Europe, with peak current figures reportedly around 1,500 amps.

That places it in an entirely different league from typical public DC fast chargers.

The demonstration setup also used battery storage packs feeding energy into the charger, allowing the system to operate off-grid while still delivering extreme power.

While this is a bigger charger than we’re used to, it’s also a completely different charging philosophy.

Custom Hardware Makes It Possible

To handle that amount of power, BYD reportedly developed its own cables and connectors rather than relying on common third-party hardware.

The station also uses an overhead arm design that keeps the cable suspended off the ground. That makes the heavy charging gun easier to use and keeps it cleaner than conventional floor-dragging cables.

Small detail, smart execution.

What Cars Can Use It?

Not every BYD can simply plug in and get these speeds.

The company says this level of charging requires:

  • 1,000-volt electrical architecture
  • Second-generation Blade Battery tech
  • Compatible megawatt charging hardware

That means it currently applies to higher-end vehicles first, though the expectation is that the technology will gradually filter into more affordable models. It’s also important to note that since the network will use CCS2 connectors, it’s open to other EVs, not just BYD models.

Could This Kill Range Anxiety?

For many buyers, range anxiety has already become charger anxiety.

The bigger issue today is often finding a reliable charger, not battery capacity itself.

Still, being able to add major range in five to ten minutes changes trip planning dramatically. A quick restroom stop or coffee break could effectively refill the car enough to continue.

That brings EV convenience much closer to gasoline habits.

Europe Rollout Already Underway

BYD says this was the first Flash Charging installation in Europe, but not the last.

The company is reportedly beginning a wider rollout this year, with ambitions to place chargers across key markets. Industry observers say highway locations will matter far more than dealership installs if the network is to succeed.

That is the real test now: not the speed, but the scale.

More Than A Tech Demo

Plenty of brands make impressive claims in controlled conditions.

What makes this different is that it was demonstrated publicly, on a real vehicle, with visible state-of-charge progression and no video tricks.

If BYD can repeat this consistently in public use, competitors will need answers fast.
