A stretch of Interstate 94 in the Chicago area became the scene of a chain-reaction crash that nearly claimed the life of an Illinois State Police trooper. The incident, captured on camera and later shared by REELZ’s On Patrol: Live, unfolded in seconds but left a lasting impression on viewers.

The trooper had stopped to investigate a crash involving a maroon sedan on the freeway. As he worked near the damaged vehicle and assisted the driver, traffic continued to pass through the area.

Video footage shows the trooper standing near the sedan when danger approached from more than one direction. Within moments, vehicles entered the crash scene and collided with the disabled car.

The trooper escaped injury by only a matter of feet. His actions during those seconds prevented him from being struck as metal, debris, and dust filled the roadway around him.

Trooper Responds To Initial Crash

The incident occurred along Interstate 94 in the Chicago region during nighttime hours. According to information surrounding the case, the trooper had responded to a previous collision involving a maroon sedan that had come to rest on the roadway.

Body camera and dash camera footage show the officer assessing the situation and checking on the driver of the damaged vehicle. Traffic continued moving through multiple lanes as emergency lights illuminated the scene.

The trooper positioned himself near the sedan while speaking with the motorist and evaluating the crash. Conditions appeared manageable until another vehicle entered the area.

For first responders, traffic stops and crash investigations often require them to work only feet from moving vehicles. In this instance, that risk became reality in an instant.

Vehicles Slam Into Wrecked Sedan

The footage shows a vehicle approaching the crash scene before colliding with the maroon sedan. The impact sent debris across the roadway and created a cloud around the area where the trooper had been standing.

Almost simultaneously, another vehicle entered the scene from the opposite side and struck the wreckage as well. The collisions transformed the original crash site into a larger emergency.

As the impacts occurred, the trooper reacted and moved away from the danger zone. The recording captures him escaping as vehicles crashed around the disabled sedan.

Drivers passing through the area can be seen slowing after the impacts, while the crash scene expanded across multiple lanes. The sequence lasted only seconds, leaving little time for anyone nearby to react.

Witnesses and viewers later described the incident as one of the closest calls they had seen involving a law enforcement officer working on a freeway.

Escape Captured on Camera

The video became the focus of attention after it was shared through REELZ and On Patrol: Live. Viewers watched the trooper avoid being pinned between vehicles during the chain-reaction collision.

Investigators later confirmed that the trooper survived the incident without serious injury. Reports indicate he was evaluated at a hospital following the crash and released.

The driver of the maroon sedan also avoided severe harm despite the vehicle being struck again during the incident. One of the drivers involved in the secondary collision was reported to be uninjured.

The footage highlights the reality faced by emergency personnel working on highways. Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and tow operators often perform their duties while traffic continues moving nearby.

Charges and Safety Concerns

Authorities said one of the drivers involved in the secondary crash faced several charges. Those charges reportedly included driving under the influence, failure to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle, following too closely, and improper lane usage.

The case drew attention to Illinois’ Scott’s Law, commonly known as the Move Over Law. The law requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles stopped along roadways.

Illinois State Police have spent years warning motorists about violations involving emergency scenes. Officials say secondary crashes remain one of the greatest threats facing officers and first responders.

For the trooper on Interstate 94, adherence to those rules could have prevented the chain of events captured on camera. Instead, a crash investigation became a near-tragedy, ending with a narrow escape that continues to draw attention long after the collision itself.
