Arizona Man Arrested After Swinging Samurai Sword Along Busy Highway

Every so often a police report lands that makes you do a double take, and this one from Arizona checks that box completely. On July 24, 2026, Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol troopers were called out to State Route 69 near Mayer after reports came in of a man swinging around a samurai sword right along the roadway. If you drive for a living or just spend a lot of time behind the wheel, you already know the highway shoulder sees some strange things, but a sword duel with nobody was apparently a new one even for the troopers.

According to AZDPS, troopers responded to the scene and made contact with the man without incident. He was found to be in possession of a samurai sword complete with a large sheath, which is not exactly the kind of roadside equipment you expect to see when you pull over for a rest stop. Officers determined he was a convicted felon, and he was arrested for Disorderly Conduct Involving Weapons along with an outstanding warrant that was already on the books.

AZDPS didn’t hold back on the commentary either, opening their Facebook post with “We can’t make this stuff up,” which honestly feels like the only appropriate response to a guy brandishing a katana on the side of SR-69. The department used the incident as a chance to remind folks of a pretty simple rule of the road (and of life in general): if you spot something dangerous happening near traffic, the move is to call 911, not to pull over and get a closer look.

For those unfamiliar with the area, SR-69 is a well-traveled route connecting Prescott to Cordes Junction, cutting through Yavapai County ranchland and small towns like Mayer along the way. It’s the kind of two-lane highway where drivers are usually watching for deer or slow-moving trucks, not sword-wielding pedestrians.

What Exactly Happened on SR-69

The details here are pretty straightforward, if a little hard to believe. Troopers got a call about a man swinging a samurai sword along the highway, showed up, and found him exactly as described, sheath and all.

There’s no indication anyone was hurt, and the arrest itself went smoothly once troopers arrived.

Weapon Charges and the Warrant

Because the man was a convicted felon, simply having the sword in that context was enough to bring a Disorderly Conduct Involving Weapons charge.

Add in an outstanding warrant, and he was headed into custody on more than one count by the time the encounter wrapped up.

A Reminder for Anyone Sharing the Road

AZDPS used the moment to reinforce something worth remembering every time you’re driving and see something off: let trained professionals handle it.

Slowing down to gawk, or worse, stopping to intervene, only adds risk for everyone else on that stretch of highway.

Our Take

There’s a version of this story where it’s genuinely alarming, and there’s a version where it’s just deeply, wonderfully Arizona. We’re leaning toward the latter, mostly because nobody was hurt and the whole thing wrapped up quickly.

That said, credit to the trooper who rolled up on a roadside samurai and just handled it like another Tuesday. That’s a level of composure most of us don’t have when someone cuts us off in traffic, let alone when the “weapon” involved has a blade.
