Traffic on Interstate 94 in Detroit came to a halt early Friday after a shooting left one driver injured near Harper Avenue. Michigan State Police shut down the eastbound lanes for hours as troopers examined evidence along the freeway.
Authorities said the shooting happened shortly before 2 a.m. on the eastbound side of I-94 between Chalmers Street and Harper Avenue. Police later confirmed that the victim drove to a hospital after the incident with gunshot wounds.
Investigators said the victim’s vehicle had been struck several times by gunfire during the shooting. State police did not release information about the driver’s condition or the number of shots fired.
The case marked the fifth reported freeway shooting in the Detroit area within less than a month. The string of incidents has drawn attention to violence on highways across the region as police continue investigations into several cases.
Driver Arrives at Hospital After Shooting
According to Michigan State Police, troopers learned about the shooting after the victim arrived at a hospital seeking treatment. Authorities said the report came in around 5 a.m., several hours after the gunfire erupted on the freeway.

Police said the shooting occurred near Harper Avenue on eastbound I-94. The victim’s vehicle showed damage from multiple rounds, according to investigators.
No information about another vehicle involved in the shooting was released Friday. Troopers also did not identify any suspects or announce arrests connected to the case.
The Detroit News reported that authorities had not identified a motive for the shooting. ClickOnDetroit also reported that no charges had been issued as of Friday morning.
Eastbound I-94 Closed for Investigation
Following the shooting, Michigan State Police closed eastbound I-94 between Chalmers Street and Harper Avenue while investigators processed the scene. Troopers urged drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes during the investigation.
The closure lasted through the morning commute. The Michigan Department of Transportation later advised drivers to re-enter the freeway at Cadieux Avenue as traffic backups formed across nearby roads.
Images from the scene showed patrol vehicles blocking freeway lanes while investigators worked near the shoulder. The shutdown remained in place shortly after 7 a.m. before the freeway reopened later in the morning.
Authorities have not said whether shell casings or other evidence were recovered from the roadway. Investigators also have not disclosed whether the shooting involved an exchange of gunfire between vehicles.
String of Freeway Shootings Raises Concerns
Friday’s shooting added to a series of freeway shootings reported across the Detroit area in recent weeks. Several incidents have taken place on major highways, including Interstate 96.

The Detroit News reported that a driver in April told police she may have been shot at while traveling on I-96. In another case earlier this year, a motorist was injured in a shooting near the Southfield Freeway.
Police have not said whether the recent shootings are connected. Investigators continue to examine evidence and witness accounts from each case.
State police asked anyone with information about Friday’s shooting on I-94 to contact investigators. Authorities have not announced whether freeway surveillance footage captured the shooting or vehicles involved in the incident. The investigation remained active Friday as troopers worked to determine how the shooting unfolded and who opened fire on the freeway.
