A New England Windstorm Took Down Trees, Power Lines, and A Few Unlucky Cars

A New England Windstorm Took Down Trees, Power Lines, and One Very Unlucky Truck

Strong winds and cold, rainy weather swept through parts of Massachusetts on May 30, leaving behind fallen trees, power outages, and damaging several properties. One resident went outside to discover that a large tree had crashed down onto a family member’s truck.

In Lynn, Massachusetts, locals woke up to a rough reminder of just how strong the overnight winds were. On Goldwhwait Street, Kebin Argueta discovered the truck, which belonged to his aunt, and it had been parked for less than an hour before the tree came down.

“The power went off, and I looked outside, and the tree landed right on the truck.” While the timing is unfortunate, it may have prevented something far worse had anyone been nearby when the tree actually fell.

The storm didn’t just leave that behind; it also knocked out traffic lights at intersections, and various homes and businesses lost electricity, forcing locals to get creative when it came to light sources.

Storm Ripped a Tree From the Ground and Damaged Cars

With the electricity being down in some parts of Lynn, businesses that remained open through the storm needed to find ways to continue operating under the conditions. One barbershop had to rely on daylight to cut their customer’s hair.

A liquor store in the area remained open without working refrigeration or even a working register system. When speaking to the liquor store’s owner, Sopheak Sus, it was explained that with ATMs offline, people have been working to find physical money.

It is unclear if these businesses remained open due to the dangers of being out on the road during the storm. Unfortunately, Lynn wasn’t the only neighborhood that also had to deal with the significant damage caused by the storm.

Jamaica Plain Also Suffers From Damage

Jamaica Plain in Boston also suffered from damage, with trees blocking the roadway and also damaging cars after falling due to heavy winds. In Stoneham, more trees were seen uprooted, with one even having crashed into a home.

Stoneham homeowner Stefan Brankovic was surveying the damage when he said, “If you look at the root, that tree has no root. I don’t even know how it was standing.” The damage extends from just that of the fallen trees, and extends to the grass and landscapes around them, with large roots visible.

Another neighbor, Bob Wopperer, explained that it is likely that residents did not expect so much destruction. “It was windy and rainy last night, but I didn’t think it was severe enough to do this kind of damage.”

What Happens Next?

Utility workers have been working to restore electricity, with outage numbers slowly dropping across the region. Even though there was extensive damage to homes, vehicles, and businesses, officials said that no one was seriously injured.

Local authorities did not release any additional identifying information.
