Some car stories are about speed.

Others are about mystery.

This one feels more like something out of a crime novel.

Because a 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was just pulled from the bottom of Sebago Lake in Maine, and no one has a clear answer for how it got there.

It Was Found By An Underwater Explorer

The discovery didn’t come from police or a planned search.

It came from a local underwater explorer scanning the lake using a drone.

Sebago Lake is the deepest lake in Maine, and its clear water makes it perfect for this kind of exploration. Even then, spotting a car sitting 55 feet below the surface wasn’t exactly expected.

At first, it was just a shadow. Then it turned into something far more interesting.

No Plates, No Clear Identity

When authorities got involved, things only became stranger.

The Camaro had no license plates, and decades underwater had erased most of its identifying details. Detectives were able to piece together part of the VIN, but tracking down the original owner is still a work in progress.

That lack of identity is a big deal, as cars don’t usually just disappear without a paper trail.

Theories Range From Simple To Suspicious

Right now, there’s no confirmed explanation, but there are a few strong theories.

One idea is that the car fell through the ice during winter. Sebago Lake freezes over, and vehicles crossing frozen lakes isn’t unheard of, especially decades ago when safety standards were, let’s say, a bit more relaxed.

Another theory is that it ended up there deliberately.

Cars dumped in water are often linked to insurance fraud, theft, or attempts to make something disappear. It happens more often than people think, even if it sounds like something out of a movie.

It Didn’t Fall Off A Ferry

Investigators have already ruled out one possibility.

Local ferry operators say the Camaro didn’t fall off a ferry, and there’s no record of any such incident. If that had happened, it would have been documented, and talked about, for years.

That leaves fewer explanations, and none of them are particularly straightforward.

The Real Tragedy Came When It Was Recovered

If you were hoping for a barn-find-style miracle, this isn’t it.

When the salvage crew pulled the Camaro out of the lake, the structure didn’t hold together. Decades of rust and water exposure had completely weakened the car, and it essentially crumbled during recovery.

So whatever story this car had to tell, most of the physical evidence is already gone.

A Mystery That May Never Be Solved

The Camaro could have been sitting at the bottom of the lake for nearly 50 years.

All that time, boats passed overhead, people swam nearby, and no one had any idea it was down there.

Now it’s been found, but the biggest question remains unanswered.

Not what it is, but why it was there in the first place.
