A woman has taken to TikTok to claim that the sunroof on her Volkswagen exploded while she was driving down the highway. TikTok user Lynette Singleton (@lynettesingleton0) showcased the incident on her account in a recent video that has over 42,000 views at the time of writing.
According to the TikTok user, she had simply been driving along as normal when the glass sunroof suddenly shattered. “Out of nowhere, my sunroof exploded yesterday while driving down the freeway,” she said in her video. While we don’t see the moment it shattered, we do see the damage that the roof left behind.
Her video showed the dark glass panel and a large, gaping hole in the middle of it. Another angle shows a huge crack running through it, with shards of broken glass everywhere.
It does look like an apocalyptic scene. The saving grace for Singleton was that the sunroof cover was closed when the roof exploded, so the glass did not cover her in the car or go all over her seats. That certainly made clearing up the mess that it had left a lot easier.

“Living in Texas, dealing with the heat, I don’t think I want another car with a sunroof,” Singleton said in her video, clearly not happy at what had happened. The big question is: why did it shatter in the first place? Well, it is actually something that is more common than you might think.
An analysis by The Wall Street Journal found complaints regarding exploding sunroofs across 17 manufacturers and 200 models over a three-year period. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has had over 2,800 complaints since 2021 regarding sunroofs suddenly shattering. From the start of 2026 through August, almost 500 complaints had been filed with the NHTSA regarding exploding sunroofs.
A variety of factors are to blame for this. Small road debris can damage the glass without a driver noticing. Hot weather and sudden temperature changes can cause it to expand and ultimately lead to it shattering. Uneven roads can also cause problems and put strain on the glass. There is also the possibility that the glass was defective at the time of manufacture, meaning there is nothing the car owner could have done to prevent it from shattering. If it was defective from new, it was bound to go sooner rather than later.
Is This a Major Safety Concern?
People reading this or watching Singleton’s video will no doubt be concerned about their own sunroofs. But is it really a major safety concern? The NHTSA spent seven years investigating unexpected sunroof breakages, following complaints about the Kia Sorento SUV. That investigation reached over a dozen automotive manufacturers and led to 4,000 reports of sunroof failures, but no major safety defect was found. It very much came across as a lot of bad luck that had led to these sunroof failures up to 2021.
Despite potential issues, sunroofs remain a popular choice for many drivers. Opening them allows fresh air into the cabin, as well as more natural light. It allows hot air to escape, and if it’s not too warm and you don’t want the air-conditioning on, it’s a great way of keeping the cabin a little bit cooler. They do make cars slightly heavier due to the switches, motors, and cables needed to operate them, and the cars are therefore more complex.
But many people do still enjoy a sunroof, even if there is an apparent chance that one day, it might explode on you.
