A Florida Man looking at a BMW M440i turned a dealership visit into something considerably more expensive than a test drive.
Pembroke Pines police arrested 29-year-old Khalil Rashad Smith on Monday after investigators said he took the BMW from a dealership employee, drove to his mother’s house, and fired multiple rounds into the home while she was inside.
The employee had even photocopied Smith’s Florida identification before handing over the key, according to an arrest form obtained by Local 10.
Nobody was struck by the gunfire. Broward Sheriff’s Office records show Smith was later booked into the Main Jail, where he remained held without bond.
The Dealership Visit Takes A Turn
Smith arrived at BMW of Pembroke Pines on Sheridan Street at about 11:55 a.m. and asked to see a blue-gray BMW M440i, according to the arrest form.
A dealership employee made a copy of Smith’s ID and allowed him into the driver’s seat. Once Smith had the key, police said he shoved the employee in the abdomen, shut the door, briefly circled the parking lot, and drove away.
The M440i is one of the more powerful versions of BMW’s 4 Series, sitting below the full-fledged M4 in the lineup.
The BMW Heads Across Pembroke Pines
At 12:28 p.m., officers received a report of shots fired at a Pembroke Pines home.
Surveillance video showed Smith backing the BMW into the driveway before climbing over a chain-link fence and entering the backyard, according to the police account. NBC 6 South Florida, citing the arrest report, said Smith was seen putting on a black ski mask and camouflage jacket.
Smith then went to a set of glass French doors leading into the primary bedroom, found them locked, and fired several rounds through the doors before returning to the BMW.
The house belonged to Smith’s mother.
Investigators said she had removed Smith from the home about a month earlier and told police he no longer had permission to be there. CBS News Miami reported that investigators said Smith used a .22-caliber handgun to fire 10 shots into the back of the residence while his mother was inside.
No one was hit.
“We are very fortunate in the situation that even though he did fire into the residence, no one was struck, and no one was injured,” Pembroke Pines Police Capt. Jason Palant said.
Police Catch Up With The BMW
Officers subsequently tracked down the BMW and stopped it during a felony traffic stop.
Police said they recovered a tan-and-black .22-caliber handgun from the BMW, along with a black ski mask and tan backpack. The handgun’s magazine was empty, and its slide was locked back. Investigators also recovered 10 spent .22-caliber cartridge casings from the shooting scene.
Broward Sheriff’s Office jail records show Smith was booked into the Main Jail following his arrest by Pembroke Pines police. He faces charges of carjacking without a firearm or weapon, armed burglary of a dwelling, structure, or conveyance, and attempted premeditated murder.
All three charges are listed as pending trial with no bond. During Smith’s Tuesday court appearance, a Broward County judge also prohibited him from contacting the victims.
All parties are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
