Monday morning started out about as normal as it gets for a family in northwest Oklahoma City. Coffee was brewing, the air conditioner was humming, and nobody was expecting an 18-wheeler to show up uninvited. But that’s exactly what happened when a semi-truck veered off the Northwest Expressway, crossed oncoming traffic, and carved a path through four backyards before crashing into the back of a house near NW 70th Street.

Two adults and a child were inside the home at the time, reported Koco News 5. Remarkably, all three walked away without a scratch. The truck driver was not so lucky, and had to be pulled from the cab by first responders before being taken to the hospital in stable condition. Police believe a medical episode may have caused him to lose control, though the investigation is still ongoing.

The crash knocked out the home’s gas meter, which set off a leak serious enough to prompt evacuations along NW 70th Street. Firefighters worked quickly given the stakes. A gas leak that close to a truck’s electrical system and a home’s electrical panel is not something anyone wants to leave sitting around.

The homeowner told local reporters she thought it was an earthquake, then wondered if a plane had gone down. Neither guess is unreasonable when a semi-truck comes through your spare bedroom without warning. She grabbed her family, shut off the air conditioners out of caution, and got everyone out safely. Four backyards were damaged along the way, including a chicken coop that lost eight to ten birds. Every good outcome seems to come with a footnote.

A Close Call That Could Have Gone Much Worse

It’s hard to overstate how differently this story could have ended. A fully loaded semi-truck traveling at highway speed does not typically stop until something very large gets in its way, and in this case that something was somebody’s house.

The fact that everyone inside walked away unharmed says a lot about luck, timing, and maybe the layout of that particular room. Firefighters on scene credited quick thinking and a fast response for keeping the situation from getting worse once the gas line ruptured.

Cleanup, Questions, and a Long Road Back

The homeowner is now without gas or air conditioning while repairs get sorted out, and she has already started working with her insurance company. Crews plan to remove the truck from the house and begin shoring up the structure once the leak is fully resolved. Police continue to investigate what caused the driver to leave the roadway in the first place.

Accidents like this are a reminder that even a routine morning can turn upside down in seconds. Everyone here is lucky the outcome wasn’t far worse.
